OK, we hit our first major snag. A blizzard near Vail, CO, forced us to abandon our drive to Denver and stay at the Alpine Inn in Frisco, CO, about 70 miles from Denver. Connor was a great co-pilot getting us info on the storm, the highway conditions, and possible local lodging while I tried to keep the car between the snow-covered lines.
We made it to Frisco/Breckenridge and found this hotel. Too bad it has a jerk clerk. He's some Nordic nabob who was trying to squeeze as much cash per room as he could from stranded motorists. We got our room for $100 which isn't too bad considering the situation. We had seen it on Hotels.com for $65 but couldn't book it that way because it was after 11.00p. Gunter knew that and said, "$100, take it or leave it." I tried the nearby Ramada and it was about the same price. Anyway, we got a room but I just wasn't happy with the deskside manner.
Anyhoo, tomorrow we now have a 9-hour drive so I think we'll forgo touring the state capitol in Denver for some drive-by touristing. ("Take the picture, Connor! It's a green light!") Tomorrow night we're staying in Beloit, KS. Let's pray there's no snow on the way.
