Bula!!!
Hello everyone, didnt think we would be able to get on the net until later in the week, but here we go:
since we left you we travelled out to Mana island on the 'Mana Flyer'. on arrival on the island, we were met by Patrick from our accomodation who walked us down to the mana lagoon homestay. there we were greeted with a welcoming song, not just by the staff but all the other guests, a regular thing on the island. the people were all really nice on the island, had good times doing more nothing: the days consisted of waking up, making our way to the beach for breakfast, lying on the beach, maybe swimming, then having to eat lunch, then some more beach lying/swimming/snorkelling/kayak relay races/beach olympics before making our way over for dinner, then drinks and on the 2nd night a fire on the beach. the food was great and was eat as much as you can, forever being told by staff to 'have samoa (some more!). we also had another display of fijian and polynesian island dancing, with fire!, but this time only three guys danced (there were more back on the mainland).
As we were staying right in a village (not just a holiday resort) we also mingled with the locals, and some of the kids especially had great fun coming and dancing and playing with us, especially rosie who was fascinated by yvette's hair!!!
on sunday we had to bid farewell to the island and all the great people we met, to make our way over to Bekana Island, this time in nicer digs than where we were on mana (the shower sprays water straight and even has a light inside!) for a few days of luxury resort living. so far we have spent the time mostly reading in hammocks (big surprise i know), although today we also mangaed a little swim and another bit of sea kayaking. Today has been strange, with a couple of pieces of bad luck: first, there we were, enjoying the relaxing times on a hammock, when after about an hour the strings decided that enough was enough and dumped us on the ground. too much all you can eat meals you say? no, i think it was a frayed rope before we got on!!! then, to add insult to injury we decided to go for a nice relaxing paddle on a kayak, not thinking to check the boat first we got straight in and off we went. after a few cries of 'we're taking on water!' from tom, we decided that it would be best to head back to shore. on the way, the boat decided that as we hurt his friend the hammock, he would capsize and throw us in the water. after capsizing once, then yvette getting back in and it capsizing again, a nice man in a boat came and towed us back to shore. thats when we realised again that it wasnt the all you can eat that made us sink, it was the fact that the canoe was full of water before we started, so sat so low in the water we didnt stand a chance. well thats how we justify it anyway :) they say bad luck happens in threes, so we spent the rest of the day sleeping in the room as that seemed the safest option.
then to the restaurant for the customary sing-song from the staff and their guitars.
didnt manage the parasailing yet, mainly due to budgetary constraints and the fact that the japanese owners of the resort on Mana put up a big fence to keep backpackers out so we couldnt get there to do it anyway! maybe next time!
sorry about the bad grammar, but this keyboard sticks and capital letters are too much effort.
we'll be back in Nadi on thursday for three more nights then off to NZ, will try to call/blog etc once we land.
Happy Birthdays Sam and James!
love to all,
Yvette and Tom

P.S. back to the grindstone tomorrow, more hammocks we think!
