Well, its monday morning after my first full weekend in Alabama. And what a weekend it was! I'm really liking this place- the people can't do enough for you- I guess thats where the phrase Southern Hospiltality derives from- and they are fascinated with my accent- I kinda like being a novelty. I've since learnt to say 'restroom' instead of loos and i'm even having to pronounce 'water' the american way as I just get blank stares when I pronounce my 't''s!!
On friday we went to this Roadhouse for dinner which resembled a barn really. Totally Southern-loved it! The atmosphere was quite something in there- everyone jeering and shouting and generally having a rucous time. The food was excellent as it always here in the States (in my opinion)! and we washed all that down with lots of alcohol which is never a bad thing.
On saturday we went to the mall after unsuccessfully trying to post my sisters bridesmaid dress- the post office closes at 12pm so we'll have to do it next weekend. Sorry sis- but don't worry- its top of my priority list! Anyhows, we visited the mall instead just opposite from our hotel- what a mall! It has every shop imaginable and some nice clothes too if you know where to look. I know the Americans aren't known for their high street fashion but some of the stores have great clothes- i'm looking forward to buying what I like rather than what fashion dictates as so many of us Europeans do. I managed to find those orange stilletoes for my hen night that I was looking fir everywhere in the UK. And at $7!! I also got another pair half price so who was I to pass up an offer like that?! It'll fill the void of no Primark, this new shop I found.
We found the perfect wedding ring too- i'd love to describe it but don't want to spoil the surprise. Anyhows, we don't want to put it on the credit card so we're gonna wait till payday before we splash out on that. But i've found it! Its sitting in a cabinet just across the street from me now and i'm thinking about it!
Saturday night? Oh yeah. We had a bad chinese takeaway and I facebooked all night avec bottle of plonk. Eric wasn't feeling too clever after going in the altitude chamber as part of his flight training on friday. His sinuses were really playing up and he was pretty much bed-bound, poor baby.
Sunday- well, I won't bore you with sunday too much as the pictures speak for themselves. But I will say that I was just so excited about this place! It was almost like a mythical or fantastical town which transported you back into the day. I almost felt like we were on the set of the Waltons or the like. It was so stereotypically Southern and we just loved it. Except it was so hot!! We also visited the planatarium whilst we were there (naturally not part of the old town) which was very interesting. Star gazing is never something that i've had the patience for in the past but after such a rivoting lecture on it I think I could be swayed to have a wee gander up there and see if I can spot the Scorpion, the Sagitarius with his arrow drawn at Scorpions heart or the dogs of summer.
Last night we went to my parents' favourite American restaurant which is Red Lobster just down the street from us (we're very central in the town of Dothan which is a big plus seeing as I have no car but also advantageous cos it gets me out of being designated driver and thus can enjoy a cocktail or margaritta or several)! That was nice- we had shrimps and salmon and of course lots left over to take home.
We then went to the movies and saw Invasion with Nicole Kidman. Now it takes a great movie to keep me in my seat at the cinema cos i'm not a big movie-watcher but this was the best film i've seen in a long while. Very profound and action packed with amazing acting. The perfect combo, methinks.
Well thats it, really. I'm making a few friends around the hotel which is nice. I go out by the pool everyday and i've been chatting to a few of the pilots that are doing Eric's fixed wing course. Also we have a charmingly sweet chamber maid- so nice to have someone else do the housework- now I truly am a lady of leisure! I'm gonna make the most of it though- in a few months after we're married and settled in Kansas they'll be no excuse- i'll have to work!
Right, speaking of the pool....holler at y'all later. Miss you all!
