Gerard en Helene Smal once in our life time
Now on the route on this lovely road N6 to East London lies this village Stutterheim
A beautiful setting against a mountain range covered in indigenous bush
This area was settled by Ex German soldiers after the Crimean war under old Baron Von Stutterheim
They acted as buffer against the marauding Xhosa tribes and were encouraged to set up farming
Woman to mary was in short supply and orphans were imported from UK to fulfill the need for woman to marry
We found lots of German surnames but little German speaking because of the English brides
It looks alike the Midlands area in Natal
On the photo is Pollie at our night stop
