After saying our goodbyes to everyone in toronto, we have now been away for a 2 full days. It certainly feels like its been longer. Here is a snapshot of the last 48 hours:
Our flight from Toronto to Miami was very smooth and short. We arrived 15 minutes early! In order to save money, we took the local 150 bus from MIA airport to Miami Beach, where our gracious host Moti, with whom we booked through airbnb.com, picked us up and drove us to the apartment we had rented. He is a very interesting and nice character. His latest venture is in the gardening/landscaping business where he is working on the beautification of the $15 million mansion of a former African head of state. The apartment was immaculately clean and very cozy and warm. We did have a bit of a walk to the beach, but hey, you are in South Beach (SoBe), and since we are on a budget and without gym memberships, walking as much as possible is the perfect solution! However, we found a gym on the beach and Andrew had a quick workout while I enjoyed the views of all the buff men, and we later found out the area is called "Muscle Beach"!
SoBe is a very lively city, with people walking around and enjoying all the shops and restaurants into the wee hours of the night. Apparently 60% of the population is Latin, which explains the mood of this city. The size of the margaritas here (which we definitely stayed away from) is a jaw dropping 45 ounces, with 2 beer bottles dunked in the glass upside down!!! Portion sizes are gigantic, and the difference in the eating mentality is painfully obvious. There are the buff and slim types having caprese salads and champagne, and the rest of the people with 10 ounce burgers and the previously mentioned margaritas. Andrew loves that we found ready to drink protein drinks in convenience stores.
People seem very friendly here, except some guy on our bus ride back on the airport who smelled like urine and thretened a lawsuit against the bus driver when she hit a speed bump.
We picked up our rental Ford Fiesta and drove to Fort Lauderdale earlier today. This is a cute little car, in which we will not be racing anyone. The acceleration is questionable, but definitely stable once it gets going. We are in Fort Lauderdale for a week, so a trip to the grocery store was a welcome change. A quick trip to Palm Springs is in the plans for the next couple of days.
I still feel like I'm on a short vacation and that in a couple of days we are flying back to Toronto and work will start again. We enjoy each day but also spend quite some time putting our plans for the next couple of weeks in order. With limited connection to the outside world, this is a pretty time consuming task!
The sun seems to tire Andrew out, so he's been taking lots of cat naps lately. I on the other hand, am energized by the sun so I am in charge of waking him up. I will wrap it up now. We are on our balcony, its about 20 degrees at 8:30 pm and we just had a home cooked chicken and sweet potato dinner along with a $6 bottle of wine. And it tasted even better than something from the top chefs on SoBe. It really did :)
Love you all, Yasi and Andrew
PS: Happy Birthday Sara!!!!
