This will be a multi part post on how to come up with a plan to travel the world for the long term. Hopefully this will provide people with a framework which they can use to realize their own travel dreams.
Why Travel For The Long Term?
Before going into how we planned for this trip I'd like to first share some of my own thoughts on long term travel, careers and life in general.
Family and good friends will always be in touch
At work, no one is irriplaceable
People rarely look back on life and think, I should have worked more
Events both good and bad will occur on the road and at home, this must be accepted
Living within your means is of paramount importance
The world is vast, life is short
How did we do it?
The question that Yasmin and I have gotten a number of times is, how were you guys able to do this? Traveling for long periods of time isn't simply a matter of booking a flight and hitting the road. While the feedback we have gotten from our friends and family has been very positive, other travellers have shared stories with us where people have been less than supportive, even critical of their descision to do something different. So how do you plan a big trip while still being a responsible adult? Plan.
The first time I struck out on a long journey was after College, I was finished with school and had few responsibilities, this time it's different. Yasmin and I both have careers, properties and lots of people we want to keep in touch with. Traveling this time would require way more planning than back in 2004. In the next couple blog of entries I will cover all the things we had to do.
Where to go and for how long?
These are the biggest questions to answer and have the greatest impact on all other steps in the planning process. The answers to these questions are also different for everyone. For us, we wanted to take a long time to travel so we could work in another country or learn a new skill or two in a unique setting. It all comes down to, what interests you? Answer this question and it will be easy to start coming up with destinations and a timeframe. Also keep in mind that you may find more things that interest you during your journey, so always include a buffer.
