So i last left you on the way to Brisbane. We showed up there and booked into a funky hostel (where i attempted to ignore the fact that the reception desk was made up of naked, distorted barbie dolls). That night (and the next) we immersed ourselves in Brisbane's nightlife, visiting a huge gay club, and another techno club (where flip flops were only accepted if they werent made of rubber?!).
I believe that was the night that i caused a small scene in mcdonalds when there was no pickle in my cheeseburger - the result was me walking home with a big smile and a cup full of pickles - result!
From there, we moved onto to Surfer's Paradise and 7 of us booked into a 3 bedroom apartment. Emma and I made our way to meet up with her family friends again at a Blues Festival, where we found ourselves drinking corona entranced by blues singers. Notable here was the sheer volume of drunk middle aged people - one of whom pushed through the toilet queue, and opened the door to see another woman sitting there. At which point everybody screamed! It was an odd moment to say the least.
The next day, we took ourselves to 'MovieWorld' and i joined the 'mental rollercoaster' group. If you've never travelled 0-100kph in 2 seconds, its well worth it (especially for the near blackout at the top!). By the end of the day, we had seen some of the most horrific ride photos ever taken - but being backpackers, we didnt waste our money buying them.
We also visited Wet n Wild - it sounds fun, but at the start of winter - you probably dont want to be wandering around in a bikini. Mum, you would have been disappointed, the lazy river was closed!
From Surfers we headed to Byron, a really strange place to find yourself with a hangover. The hostel has the option to sleep in a teepee for goodness sake! We visited the notorious 'Cheeky Monkeys' club where i managed to get punched in the face (an accident, i assure you), send a video email and play a dramatic game of jenga. The next morning we were off to Nimbin. Without saying too much, this place is a hippy haven, with plenty of old people selling various herbal drugs. The whole place was very amusing and full of absolute weirdos. Our final day in Byron was really nice weather, and with live music and a weekend market, we wandered around the stalls trying not to buy stuff that we really didnt need. Such a nice day, made better by the huge potato i had for lunch!!
Our last stop before Sydney was Spot X - surf camp. We had the hugest buffet lunch for $5 before another surf lesson in which everybody managed to stand up. That night, we sat around a fire, relatively tipsy where a hot debate about nursery rhymes broke out. (Does anybody know the actual story to Billy Goats Gruff?).
Ok, thats all for now, update again before we leave Oz!
lots of love xxx
