What an intresting week i've had so far!
So I got here at half 8 on Tuesday to be greeted at the airport by Rachel. It was so nice she was waiting for me and she's made me feel really settled whilst im out here. And yes Paul she's forever helping me so im sure she'll be posting me back to you soon!
We got an airbus and a tube to Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. The hostel was really nice and clean. It had a western toilet and a good shower and i've learnt already to be greatful to stay somewhere like that. Kuala Lumpur is so cheep!! our accomodation was about 5 quid a night. meals were between 1 and 2 quid.
My first day Rach and Rob took me to see the Petronas Towers and get some food in the shopping centre. We then went to the markets and had a pedicure by fish!! They nibble the dead skin off your feet is the strangest feeling ever! The second night we couldnt get in to the same hostel so stayed next door - what a difference!! It was so dirty and I saw a massive rat in the shower lol. Well I say a shower it is a pipe over the toilet.
Me and Rach went to the Batu caves on my second day and they were gorgeous. Its really odd that they are in kuala lumpur as the centre is hustle and bustle, sweaty and dirty. So far ive tried curry, beer, used a toilet in a floor and shared a shower with a rat. To Sinapore we go.......
We got the coach which was an unforgettable experience. On the way there we were woken up by the driver shouting "passport passport!!!!". Everyone was running and we didnt know what to do. We had to run off the coach and show our passports to cross the border. I thought, why on earth is everyone running like mental people at 5 in the morning. But if you dont get through quick enough the coaches leave you!!
We then got shouted at to get off about 30min later so we thought we'd got there. But it was customs checking our bags and if you dont get through quick enough the coaches leaves you there too. I couldnt believe it it was 20questions I had to explain when I last travelled, why I was going there, where I was staying, the coach company I was using, it was baffling at such an early hour we were half asleep. I got my bag through, turned round to look for rach and she was being taken into a room!! WTF!!!
She had 3 packs of cigs in her bag and apparently you arent supposed to take cigs through the border cos you have to pay tax on them in Singapore so can only buy them from there. She was told she had to pay a fine of 500dollers per pack, but luckily after explaining that she had no idea about that rule they let her off the fine and put a stamp in her passport. The coach had left us but luckily rach managed to convince another coach driver to take us the rest of the way..phew.
We checked in to our new hostel and had a good old sleep to recover. I absolutley love Singapore, can't believe how totally different it is to Kuala Lumpur. Its huge and I really like that there are massive trees all over the city, you'll see from my pics. We have been forever walking to see as much as poss and Im sure im an athlete by now. The city centre is so distracting!! Absolutley gorgeous shops everywhere, a shoppers heaven. Everytime we came off a train to try and look round somewhere we had wondered into a shop by accident.
I also cant believe how western it is. Everyone speaks better english than me and its so easy to get to different parts of the city by train. Its so organised, clean and modern. A world away from sunny Leeds.
We went for tea in china town and it looked so pretty lit up. Today we went to the zoo and then for a curry in little india. Hope I dont poo my pants tonight in the floor toilet - nice. I've had a great time here and I would def come back to Singapore. It was really hard to try and fit as much as possible into two days here but I think we've done well. We've seen the city centre, orchid road, the merlion, china town, and little india.
We fly to Phuket tomorrow and im so looking forward to try and get a tan, im so so so so so white and as the wheather is warm here but cloudy, im looking forward to looking a little healthier in the next few weeks. Bring on Thailand.....
