So once again I had a poor nights sleep, this time due to the itchiness of my bites :(
It was an early start, 6.45am to catch an 8am train to Verona. As we walked out the hotel the air was cool which was good and a huge market was being set up. The train was really nice, we had reserved seats which were really wide and all the chairs were at a table.
When we arrived in Verona we first went to the pharmacy to sort out some stuff for my bites and then walked into Verona. It's by far the best city to navigate around, everything is signposted and it's quite small.
We absolutely loved Verona, it's incredibly beautiful and we'd love to come back. The weather today has been amazing, about 32 but with a breeze so it's been comfortable.
We had 9 hours in Verona with no grand plan so we had plenty of time to stroll around and get a feel of the place. It isn't too touristy at all, the only place we encountered any level of crowd was when we visited 'Juliet's Balcony'. It sits in a small courtyard so there's a lot of people in a small place. In the little alley leading up to the courtyard people had wrote messages of love, on the wall itself, post it notes, plasters and even sanitary pads!
Another nice feature of Verona is it has a river running through it and a number of bridges we criss-crossed over throughout the day, each designed differently. One even had a small stone staircase where you could climb on top of the bridge. I did it whilst Adam stayed at the bottom but it was so high and the steps so narrow Adam had to help me back down haha.
Piazza Bra is the centre of Verona. It's the largest piazza in Italy and also where the arena is (their much bigger version of the colosseum). Although we did walk through the piazza a couple of times we didn't really tend to stop because this seemed to be quite a busy area as they were transporting in all the props for tonight's opera at the Arena, which we had tickets for but unfortunately was unable to go because the last train left before the opera had even started.
We had lunch at a gorgeous place just off the river, that's where the photo was taken. I had a ricotta and ham calzone whilst Adam had a ham and sausage pizza and we each had this amazing dessert which consisted of a kind of white chocolate cream with a pistachio paste which had been almost mixed in with crushed biscuit, all encased in chocolate. I know that kind of sounds disgusting but it was beautiful! It was a really pretty place to eat too.
We spent a lot of time walking around the shops and also sitting in parks as 9 hours of walking around can get very tiring! We spent a while walking around supermarkets too, we just love seeing all the different stuff they do. Mostly their wide varieties of pasta, cheese and ham! We've decided when we have the apartment in Florence we'll have to try and schedule in some time to cook!
We even spent half an hour talking to an Italian man as he took us around his shop. He restored furniture and most of the stuff he had were Italian mirrors from the 1800's but he also had some really cool Art Deco stuff. He left them in their unrestored state until they were bought and then he would discuss with the new owner what level of restoration they would like. He was really friendly and told us some of his ideas for some of the pieces.
Before grabbing the train we got 2 grilled ham and cheese focaccia's and some peach juice and then settled on the (absolutely empty) train for our 90 minute return journey.
