Today we got up at half 8, got ready, got ourselves some breakfast in the guest kitchen and then got the 9.30am train into Naples. Naples is about 15 minutes down the line so we arrived in time to get me some pic n mix and grab a big bottle of water for the day.
We met up for our tour just outside the station and from there it was about 20 minutes to Pompeii. I was looking forward to it because I remember it as a highlight of my trip when I visited as a teenager.
We had a 2 hour tour of the sights and it's so amazing to see a snapshot of life in 79ad including the local baths, the markets and of course the brothel. It was the best preserved of all the ruins we had seen.
We then all went to a restaurant, just outside the ruins where we had lunch included in the trip. This included a pizza and a soft drink. The pizza was really good, we were sat at a table with an older couple from Perth who were really nice and we chatted throughout.
Then it was time to hike up mount Vesuvius! I was quite full so had my fingers crossed I wouldn't get a stitch! It was a tough climb, we hardly had walking shoes on and the floor was ashy underneath. It was like walking on sand so my calves were burning. We finally arrived at the top after a seemingly endless climb. That is where our photo was taken, what elation!
Luckily for us the temperature up the mountain was considerably cooler than on the ground. The ground was about 32 whilst the mountain was about 22 so it made it much easier. I still had a red face though!
We stopped at the top for a couple of minutes, taking some photos of the phenomenal view over the coast. The walk down was trickier than I had considered, again being like sand the floor could just give way under you. There was an occasion where I fell down, nearly doing the splits!
We finally got down to the bottom, we felt like we were covered with ash from head to toe. As a consequence we did as yesterday and grabbed some bits from the station and took them back and have a nice peaceful evening! Something tells me we will be aching tomorrow...
