We had a brilliant day yesterday. In the morning we went to Parliament Houses! Old and new. Both buildings are spectacular and in awesome positions above Canberra. The old one was built in 1927 and was meant to be temporary but the new one followed in 1988 I think. When we arrived we saw the Aboriginal Embassy which is in all my photos. There is a makeshift camp with tents right in front of the Parliament. I think they are trying to make a statement. It was a glorious day though and I enjoyed seeing the different buildings. The old one was all wood panellist and parquet floors. The new one had loads of marble pillars but some of the floors reflected the old building. Both had crisp clear lines inside - what you would expect from Australian architecture really. In the old one they ran through the history of Australian democracy and had a dressing up section! In the new one, there is a copy of the apology from Australia to the aboriginals and their acceptance of this. We went onto the roof to look at the view of the old house and the lake, the War Memorial and he amazing autumnal colours which are just beginning to come.
