So I'm finally back with a blog! I suck at this, I know, but sometimes it feels like homework so I just try and ignore it for as long as possible. But I was getting more and more harrasing messages from some certain people who work at a certain school so I decided it was best I wrote before it was too late!
So I was just about to tell you guys about Fraser Island. Basically we were spending 2 nights and 3 days on the Island on a type of safari, except that we had no guides and you were put into a group of 10 or 11 of strangers. There are no roads at all on Fraser Island it's all just sand tracks, and the highway is the beach. In our group was the 4 of us, then two other british girls, 3 irish and a candian. The first place we went to was Lake McKenzie which was this pure water lake with white sandy beaches around it. It was one of my favourite beachs of this whole trip (even if the water was a tad cold!) For abit of fun we decided to bury me in the sand but so you could only see my head which was cool untill chris decided to sit on my head. Next was the Maheno Shipwreck, which to be honest wasn't that amazing and then we went to set up camp with the other 4 trucks which left at the same time as us. We got to the camp of most of the other trucks were already there (cos we got lost) and we cooked the food they gave us, pitched up our tent and started to drink the excessive amounts of alcohol everyone bought with them. Everyone was pretty much drinking goon (you know the horrible box wine with fish and egg in it) and basically I passed out mid conversation. I don't what it is with that stuff but it was an early night for me at 10pm! However some people were even unluckier than me because in the night they left their food out and it all got eaten by dingos! There were dingo's everywhere on the Island and they would come so close to us.
The next day we drove to Indian Head which is this cliff that sticks out into the sea and you can climb all around it and sit on the edge. Apparently you can see whales and sharks on a clear day bit ours was abit windy and rough but there were some stunning views nonetheless. Also from the back of the cliff you could see the massive sand dunes which form alot alot of the Island. It quite a odd thing to see, you can the pacific ocean, then sand dunes and rainforest all within a quarter of a mile from eachother. Afterwards we went to a nice river and walk through it, but because we were all so shattered we all fell asleep in the sand outside our truck for a while. Pretty much the whole time we were there most of us felt like little kids again, I loved it. The driving of the Island is really fun aswell becuase you get to drive in the sea and if your sat in the back you are always being thrown around or getting wet because there is holes in the roof or you accidently leave the window open as your drive in the sea and the people opposite you gets sprayed in the face (which happened to me more than once). Half the fun of Fraser Island is the driving around. That night we decided to camp on the beach which was good except for the lack of running water but nobody really cared that much. We had a campfire and drank lots of goon. This time before I passed out I decided I would treat my fellow travellers to abit of casual nudity, I have no idea why, but I'm pretty sure the small group of swedish people I was talking too will never forget Fraser Island for one reaosn or another.
The next morning I woke up, feeling rather sheepish, and we decided to head towards another lake called Lake Wabby. To be honest I wasn't that bothered about going there and when we arrived to where we head to start the walk to get there it was raining pretty hard. It took half an hour to get there but when we did it was 100% worth it! It was possibly the best thing I have ever seen! It was a huge, very steep sand dune which ran into a lake. So obviously I ran down the sand dune at full speed, literally flying in the air as I was running down and then jumping straight into the lake which had loads of eels swimming around! It was awesome. We even tried rolling down which made me feel slightly sick ha. But it was the perfect ending to an amazing couple of days. We had to rush back to where we started from to get the ferry back, which we missed. So we had to wait another 45 minutes for another one. We got back to the hostel at around 3ish and that evening we all played cards and I finally learnt how to play s***head, which is by far my favourite card game of all time now. And we had an early night because we had to get up early the next morning to head to Australia Zoo!
So we all wake up about an hour later than we planned and rush to get everything ready and get to the zoo. Luckily for us, I had over-estimated how long it would take us and the park didn't open till 10 anyway so we got there on time. Personally I'm not that big on zoo's, just because I find them slightly boring but I had a pretty good time. We hung out with some kangaroo's, saw baby koala bears, wombats, dingos, elephants and we saw the crocidile show. However there is one disturbing thing about the zoo and its how they seem to pimp out Steve Irwins children. We went to the girft shop and they had Bindi's face or name on everything like cd's with tracks called 'I Want To Be Like My Dad' or Bindi's Kids Fitness DVD's and a Bindi clothes line, oh and a Bindi burger at the food court! I found it abit weird.
We were going to stay in Brisbane but because campsites are so expensive in the main cities we decided to drive straight through to our next destination Surfers Paradise. We got there about 9ish, just in time to get a camping spot. We were taken back by how developed it was because we were kind of expecting a small town like Airlie Beach but it was a full on city. The next day we found a better campsite closer to the City and decided to have a look round. There were some good shopping going on and nightlife, plus it was right on the beach. I'm not sure what night me and Steph went out but one night we went to quite a few bars (alot of them "irish bars") and one place called Bedroom which had bed scattered around inside which was fun (cue steph taking a million pictures). We also took a day out to Water World. It's a shame it was winter because more of the slides would of been open if it was summer but we had a good time nonetheless.
After Surfers, we headed down to Byron Bay which I was really excited about. Byron Bay is abit of a hippie hangout. It's not built up like Surfers, and it's alot less commercial that anywhere we had been so far. It was nice just to explore a town and not have to do anything inparticular so we went to the beach and explored the town. One day we headed to a village called Nimbin which was interesting. They had a good museum there which I thought was cool, and we got talking to a few locals and stuff like that. It was definitely one of the HIGHlights of the trip. The next day we met up with Chris, Steph and Robin's friend Cat, who they had met in LA. We went out but I got abit bored so went back to the camper early. Our next stop was Sydney but it was more than 900km away so we decided to break the journey up with a stop in Port Macquarie. Robin finally got to see the Indiana Jones movie while me and Chris played s***head about a million times.
We arrived in Sydney the next day at about 4/5ish in the afternoon. It's impossible to camp anywhere in the heart of a city so we were staying about 9km out which wasn't that bad because there were buses throughout the night if we wanted to go out. The first day we decided to see all the touristy things like visit the Sydney Opera house (which really is stunning as you'd imagine) and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We also went to The Rocks which is one of the first settlements of Westerners in Australia. While looking around we all felt in awe of where we were. I never actually thought I would ever see Sydney when I used to see it on the telly when I was younger. And it is such a brilliant city anyway you can't help but love the place. The next day we went into the city again and me and Steph bought tickets to see Hamlet at the Sydney Opera House! It was for two days later and they were the last two tickets, we were so lucky!
