Three days later and we are coming to the end of our time in the wetlands of Ibera in Corrientes province. The esteros are about 600km south of Iguazu and extend for an area half the size of wales. We have been staying at an old estancia in the small community of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini right by one of the largest lakes Laguna Ibera. The whole area is a national wetlands reserve and the reason we came here was to see the wildlife.
We travelled on Friday from puerto Iguazu to the estancia by road in four wheeled drive cars. The last hundred miles were on dirt tracks and was very bumpy and dusty. The area is completely flat and therefore the sky is huge. Colonia is 70 miles from the nearest town which means that there is no light pollutions at all at nights. We were able to clearly see the milky way. The estancia where we are staying has been converted into an exclusive country house type hotel which has only 12 rooms, haut cuisine cooking and personal guided boat and walking trips to see the wildlife.
On the boat trips we were able to go right up to Caymen and the capybaras, big rats, and view many kinds of beautifully coloured birds from very close quarters. It was absolutely fantastic. We hope the photos in the album do our experienced justice but to be honest most of the time we just wanted to look at everything. This evening we went out in a canoe with a guide but didnt see anything because the wind had got up and the waves were a bit big. When the conditions are like this most of the animals decide to stay ashore and not go into the lake. Judging by the amount of water in the canoe and our tired shoulders from paddeling by the time we got back from the estancia we think the animal sare very sensible!
Tomorrow we fly to BUenos Aires for one night before going to the seaside.
