I finally made it to Vietnam, after the gruelling 24 hours in total flight time going from Edmonton to San Franciso to Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City. The last plane ride, which was 6 hours long felt like forever. However, I am done with flying long distances for a while now, which I am happy about.
The customs in Vietnam is strange, as they just check your passport and unless you have something to claim you just send your baggage through the scanner and are on your way (had a slightly difficult time as not many workers in the airport seem to speak english).
Stepping out of the airport reminded me a lot of Costa Rica, as there are individuals lined up outside the doors waiting for family and friends; as well as, a bunch of taxi drivers and hotel drivers that are waiting for people. The temperature is insanely humid so it will be interesting to see how hot it gets during the day.
Driving from the airport to the hotel was an experience. It seems as though almost all Vietnamese own a scooter, they are in and out of traffic and if they aren't currently driving they have their scooter parked in a little side cafe, or restaurant, or joint. I think the only way everyone avoids an accident is by driving super slow and honking whenever someone gets too close, or isn't paying attention.
It also reminds me a bit of Vegas as there are a lot of neon bright lite signs on almost every corner that light up; some advertise high end electronics or automobiles, while others just inform people of karaokee. The streets are littered with some trash but overall it seems like it is a neat place... more will be determined when it is light outside.
Did have to cross the street; however, it was with the driver when checking into the hotel and it was a bit nerve racking. The scooter drivers don't really stop for walkers and they try and weave around you so they don't have to stop. The hotel driver that I walked across the street with held up a piece of paper while crossing so we would be recognized and not hit. Ah.
Overall, the hotel is pretty nice and modern and the employees are very friendly and helpful. Besides that I don't have much else to say. Not sure if I will be doing a heck of a lot tomorrow as I plan to sleep in late then will be meeting up with the rest of the Contiki group. But will keep everyone posted!

Batman Craziness I say. Craziness. A lady from work says you just start walking and play frogger basically. That's what she experienced. But at least you survived your first frogger :)
Paula Is that what the lady said who just got back from Vietnam? I would say that would be a pretty accurate description of what it is like to walk across the street. I am still amazed that the manage to function with that much traffic on the roads. I will try and take photos or a video when I can!
Painter Hope you've got some sleep and beginning to feel more like your usual self. Still wish we were there sharing the adventure with you!
