Flew into Vientiane around 4pm and proceeded to check into our hotel. We were all starving so we headed off to dinner - I had battered fish with spicy sauce and rice; it was tasty.
After dinner we went to the markets, found out that the people of Lao do barter and don't always agree with westerners but bought a pair of temple pants (40,000 = 5 USD) and two bracelets (got 3 for 20,000 = 2.5 USD) the markets closed at 10 pm so had less than an hour to look around.
We then were planning on going bowling but we spotted a carnival across the street and decided to check it out. The tour guides tried to pop three balloons for a prize; they were trying to win something for my roommate who's birthday it was. Eventually, after a couple failed attempts they won a prize. We then spotted bumper cars and decided to go on them. It was a lot of fun and it seemed like we were on them for at least 15 mins, if not more. But once our time was up we weren't able to go again because the carnival was closing.
Only concern is at the airport I tried taking out some money with my visa but I wasn't able to, but I still had some cash so I just exchanged that. But a guy on the tour has been trying to use the ATM here and has gone to probably 7 of them and none of them will take his card or work. So I'm a bit concerned that my card also won't work.. But I'll try tomorrow and see. But my credit card company knows I'm here. So guess if anything I will just try to get cash back from a store or a hotel.
Laos is impressive, very quiet but prefer laos to Vietnam. Lots of nice looking expensive hotels and the roads!!! It's like being back in Canada; except there are a couple crazy speeders who don't stop but the majority of people are patient and wait for you to cross the road. The roads are empty, the city is very quiet and there aren't that many people up and about.
