Well we weren´t planning to do it but we did it though my sister katherine is note going to be happy! Huayna Potosi - 6088m or to put it another way just over 2/3rds of Everest, higher than Mont Blanc (4260m) higher than Kilimanjaro (5895m) plus we had good practice using ice axes and crampons along the way.
It took us 2 days to climb with a day to acclimatise at base camp, stock up on carbs and play on glaciers beforehand. the first day of the climb was only about 3 and a half hours to get up to high camp but when your starting altitude is 4775m every step takes its toll and on the advice of some german mountaineers we met we took it very slowly to save energy for the summit climb with our guide Felix (got to love that!) setting a steady pace. We arrived at high camp 5330m with time to dine on noodles and sausage with coca tea before heading to bed at 6pm. The reason for the early night is that for the final day to the summit we got up at half past midnight and set out partly to see sunrise at the summit but moreso as the ice bridges over the crevasses tend to get a bit dodgy later in the day. the summit climb too kirst and me 5 1/4 hours and we were first up enabling us to revel in the rising sun on our own for about 10 minutes before the rest of the group made it. By noon we were back at base camp, not believing that we had succeeded and feeling pretty knackered... its amazing what lengths one will go to for a free t shirt!
