Sitting in Room 13 at Wirral Grammar School, throwing a red ball to Frau Flather whilst saying "Ich bin Daniel. Ich bin zwölf Jahre alt" is a distant memory now. But it was that day that set me on the path that ultimately led me to this points, where I am two days away from leaving my country of birth to travel to the far land that people call Germany and live as a Berliner.
As several people have asked me recently, it seems not everyone is clear about what I'm doing. So here it is:
I'm moving to Berlin, the capital city of Germany, and the plan is to live there for "at least a year". I have studied German for 7 years (including at A-Level and one year at Uni - before the scariness of Judith, Birgit and co got too much) but I have reached the limit where to become more fluent in German, I either need to work really hard at it, or move to Germany and 'immerse' myself in the language. The second option sounded more fun. Having visited Berlin twice before (once with school, once with a bunch of crazy Eurovision fans) and having loved it both times, it was an easy decision to move there. I plan to get a job in a bar and have an epic crazy 12 months of fun. And I wouldn't be surprised if I accidentally end up becoming a dragqueen. I have prepared routines just in case.
Faced with such an exciting prospect of moving abroad, I somehow have managed to be somewhat organised (taking props from the Germans) and have even found a place to live already.
What I know about my new Wohnung already:
It is on Schierker Strasse, which runs between Hermannstrasse and Karl-Marx-Strasse.
It is in the Neukölln region of Berlin, very close to Tempelhof airport, which is thankfully now closed!
I have a German flatmate called Nadi. She is a lesbian, and when I first spoke to her on skype, she was doing shots of vodka then fanta. We are clearly going to have fun.
I have a double bed. For the first time in my life. I paid for it and it is mine, all mine! I am very excited about this.
My room lacks a duvet, pillow, curtains and a light. Thank God for IKEA.
I will need to buy an iron, and this is at the top of my to-do list.
I'M SO EXCITED!
