Poor Bernie, he is besides himself due to the poor weather. He is so keen for me to see the local mountains but the cloud base is not playing ball, however, there is a glimmer of hope as today is quite alot brighter. It has rained every day I have been here and even the local mountain, called The Chief, looks miserable. The Chief is the second largest grannit mountain in the World and towers above the town, it is directly outside the development where I am, rising massively up into the clouds, it is very impressive. I have been to the Squamish visitors centre which is full of local detail carved into large wooden tablets about 7 feet high, there is also a small cinema in the centre which shows a film all about the first mountaineers to climb the face of the Chief. It was a remarkable achievement given the lack of equipment or modern technology, the rock face is rated as the 7th most difficult rock climb in the World and you can appreciate why when you look at it. It is just sheer rock. Amazing. Warren, a local friend of the Hodges, has guided me right infront of a Black Bear today, see photo. It's the nearest I have been to a wild Bear and was quite happy to have the car and a barrier between it and me, thank you. Warren explained that it was a male Bear and would have just stood up on its hind legs, sniffed the air and gone into the woods if I had got out. Yeah right and my names' Richard Head!
In my haste to get back in the car I dropped my camera into the centre consol, I didnt realise at the time but I managed to dent the case, this has pushed against the 'Delete' button and frozen the controls. I have not lost any pictures but couldn't take any more as the camera would not work. We tralled the local shops but they wouldn't touch it, so with nothing to lose I purchased some precision screwdrivers and a pair of fine nosed pliers. We returned home and I went about a delicate operation with a cool head and a steady hand. I managed to get the back off and repair the dent without disturbing the inner workings. I released the trapped button and restored good order, well done Winnie, another entry on the CV - Digital camera repairs!
We went to the local Bald Eagle viewing spot, but I think someone told them I was coming because they had all gone out for lunch! Better luck next time. I am told that all being well, I am going flying tomorrow with Pat. Pat and I went Spinning to other night and got on well so I am really looking forward to that. I am also told that in the afternoon I am being taken on a large yacht to spend the night on a nearby Island. I didn't think I was that unpopular! I don't smell as I have showered every day so far! if this requires me to perform some strange Canadian ritual they can think again. I don't mind the face paint but those feathers are really sharp and it's not good when you sit down, believe me. Perhaps we can sing Ging Gang Goollie round the camp fire? The things I do for you folks! It's going to be fun - isn't it?
Okay, you are right up to date now so will let you know how tomorrow goes when I get back to dry land soon. I have posted some more photos under the title 'Squamish', Take care, Chris.
