Apologies Everyone,
I thought that I had already added this update regarding our visit to the Grand Canyon but obviously not. Sorry about that, here we ago again -
30th June , We had a really hot drive to The Canyon but arrived within 40 miles to be met by torrential rain. After a couple of hicups we got to a cabin at the main centre. it is a bit kitch, a bit like an american version of our holiday camps and was a bit expensive but we were within 120 yards of the actual North Rim so no complaints there.
The weather is quite changeable and the view across the Canyon to the South rim is poor due to a high pollusion levels Not something I would have associated with the Grand Canyon before now but I am informed that this is due in part to air pollusion from San Francisco and also not helped by the fires in California State. What can be said about The Grand Canyon, well, it's big! yep that'll do. Trying to take any kind of picture which will do it justice is neigh on impossible unless you have some very decent kit with you, which I don't, but I've done my best.
We watched the sunset with just about everyone else who seemed to be staying there and there was one terrifying moment when a negligent parent let their very small child dangle from one of the barriers. This may have been okay if the child had not had his feet through the fence and there was nothing but an aweful fall to the Canyon basin to stop him. People around were horrified and fortunately nothing happened but there were sighs of relief shaking of heads when the family moved on.
the sunset was worth it all and I have had to be a bit ruthless in getting rid of the dozens of photos taken and included only a few. I know you will be glad of that!
01 july - We got up really early to watch the sun rise! not so many people around this time, we had decided the night before that once we were up we would get straight on with a decent trek. So, once the necessary pictures had been obtained, we downed a hasty breakfast and set off for Widfross Trail. Gunner(not an Arsenal fan by all accounts) Widfross, was an artist and found a point on the Transept from where he painted watercolours. His attention to details and accuracy were such that his pictures are considered to be of geological importance. Sounds a bit 'arty' I know but I have my moments, and the trail is ten miles start to finish so it was a reasonable yomp, in this terrain anyway.
We completed the walk in 5 and a half hours including 3 stops and having lunch (mid morning snack) at the mid way point. It was nice and cool on the outward leg and very hot on the homeward stretch. We arrived at the car just ahead of thunderclaps1 having seen the number of trees which have been completely rent by lightening, I was glad to be back at the car, apparently you should move away from the rim when thunder and lightening are around as that is the point where it strikes most commonly. We visited several different points along the rim including Paradise Point where I think I got the best photos from. I hope you enjoy them in any case.
the Canyon really was worth visiting and I have enjoyed it. It is one of the wonders of the world and you can just stand and stare at it for hours, however, I have to say that Zion and Bryce are just as worthy of the title 'Grand' and are not to be missed if you are out this way.
We are moving onto Vegas next via the Hoover Dam.
Best Wishes, Chris
