Days 9 and 10 - free toblerone!!! and the twin towers? The ones from The Lord of the Rings?"
Pudu, Malaysia
Day 9 - Free toblerone!!!
Day nine begins with a fairly early wake up so we can make it to the airport for our flight down to Kuala Lumpur! The man from the hotel also seems to be a taxi driver and takes us the 5 minute drive himself! Nice guy!! So we get to the airport and its like we've stepped back in time, back to 10 years ago when you really did need to be at the airport 3 hours before an international flight! This was a painfully slow check in! After a walk around the departure lounge, sampling some of the delightfully cheap duty free I spot a typically 'chavvy' English family walking past and after a little listen to their conversations I heard this: (read this in a very strong manc accent) "it's twice as 'ot as Tenerife 'ere" this just made me chuckle purely because of who was saying it! After an easy flight which consisted of a nice meal with a free toblerone which we were very excited about, we had arrived at Kuala Lumpur airport!! After a short wait at immigration our bags were waiting for us on the carousel when we came out! I love when that happens! We got a taxi from outside the terminal and it was a very wet 45 minute journey to the city centre where our hotel is! The hotel is nice, clean and we have a huge room, so big that I feel there is a little wasted space, there could definitely be a pool table or a hot tub in here or something! Since it was still raining cats and dogs and we were pretty tired from traveling all day we decided not to venture out, we decided we'd take in what the hotel restaurant and bar had to offer, after a few beers and wines in the bar in the lobby we booked a table in the restaurant for a bit of Malaysian food, it's a bit of a mixture of all of asia's food types! Chinese, Indian and Thai all on one plate, I can't exactly tell you what we had but it had fried rice, curried chicken leg, some sort of chicken kebab and poppadoms and some other stuff that was unidentifiable... But it was delicious! After this we decide on an early night in the room watching a film or two (confessions of a shopaholic and cruel intentions)(I didn't have the remote). This is the first hotel not to have wifi for free in the time we've been away and it isn't cheap to buy it! 10 ringgit for 2 hours, 30 for 12 hours and 50 for 48 hours, we plump for just the 2 hours at first, for a couple of quid and how fast it was we thought we'd cough up! After the films had finished we settled in for the night ahead of a long day exploring Kuala Lumpur in the morning!
Day 10 - "the twin towers? The ones from The Lord of the Rings?"
Day 10 begins with a big breakfast down in the restaurant, this really got us fuelled up for the day ahead, Becky was especially happy as she found baked beans and hash browns! I stayed as an American with waffles and syrup! We left the hotel and got a taxi going straight to the petronas twin towers in the hope of going up them, we get in and find the ticket desk, only to be informed that the earliest we can go up is 15:15 so we pay the 80 ringgit for the tickets and go out and decide we'll go off and do some other things in the city! We set off walking towards the other tall tower in the city, the KL tower which isn't quite as tall but still has an observation deck! After a while of just waking towards it, we move off the street that would have taken us right there and onto another one which ended up taking us in a massive circle around the tower to the other side, at first this was an unpleasant surprise that there wasn't a shorter route from the one we'd decided upon but after a while of walking we realised we were seeing much more of the city than we would have done before, plus burning a few of the calories from the previous evenings meal in the searing heat! We finally arrive at the tower and decide to pay the 47 ringgit to the top because the sun was out and just in case it was raining in the afternoon when we went up the petronas towers, we thought it best to see the views then and there! After a good half an hour of spectacular views and a lot of photos we decide to come down and set off on another jolly jaunt down to Chinatown for a spot of lunch and a beer! After a walk down the covered street of Chinatown which is filled with stalls and shops that are crammed full of fake handbags, watches and football tops etc, we settle on a hotel on the street for a spot of lunch and a beer or two! We found Chang!! We managed to get our fix satisfied, even though it was imported and only 5%vol as opposed to the usual 6.2 or higher!! After a while it was getting closer to our allotted time to go up the petronas towers so we walked up the street to get a taxi, which we promptly acquired and we were there in no time! This gave us some time to go around the shopping centre directly underneath the towers, this gave me the opportunity to buy a scrap book, glue and a pen so I could stick all the receipts and boarding cards I have into it to accompany this blog when I get home! After we did this we still had a little more time to kill before going up the towers, so we went outside for some air! When we got out of the doors it was biblically raining with the loudest thunder I've ever heard! We thought oh great, we really won't be able to see anything, we definitely made the right choice going up the KL tower first!! Luckily when the time came, the storm had moved away and it was brightening up again! The tour of the towers started off with a little safety briefing by a hologram of a woman (it was just a projector, projecting onto a screen of smoke, nice effect), we then got into the lift up to the 41st floor where we were allowed about 15 minutes waking around the 'sky bridge' that connects the towers together! Apparently it isn't really attached to the towers in a big way in case of strong winds, so it can move independently of the towers! All very interesting!! After this we were ushered into another lift which would take us to the 86th floor where the observation deck was! WOW this is high, I got a little vertigo when backing up to a big window to have my picture with the other tower... There were lots of little interesting tidbits about the building of them and the entire complex for which they are part! I have to be honest and say I'm a MASSIVE nerd when it comes to places like this, they fascinate me, ever since I was about 9 or 10 and saw pictures on tv of this place being opened in 1999 and watched documentaries, I have always wanted to come here!! I never thought i would and it did not disappoint at all!! I've been grinning from ear to ear all day!!
We're then ushered back down the lift after a good period of photo taking and we decided to head back into the shopping centre for an early tea! We plump for nandos... Don't judge us, we just wanted to see if it was the same here as it is at home (it's slightly different) plus we ate Malaysian last night so we're not bothered! After this we head back to the hotel pretty exhausted after a lot of walking in extreme heat and humidity! We have a beer and a wine in the hotel bar and we have an early night ahead of going down to malacca tomorrow for a day of culture!
Thanks for reading!
