Morning all,
Sorry for the gap between blogs this time. This is due to the fact that for the last two weeks I've not done much to entertain you all so it's two blogs in one this week.
As you know I had to come back from Cambodia to go to the hospital in Bangkok where I managed to get my wallet stolen and lose faith in humanity in the space of a day. After a couple of days chilling out however, things were on the up and I was finally able to get to a hospital and have my blood tests. It was a strange old place, made even more weird by the fact that the nurse who registered me was the exact double of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted in voice and looks! She also didn't take no for an answer. Here's a little of our conversation...
Nurse Doyle "will I go with you to the doctors room?"
Me "Oh there's really no need I'm sure I can find it"
Nurse Doyle "Don't be stupid I'm coming with you"
Me " No really it's ok"
Nurse Doyle " and how will you find by yourself not being well at all....i'll show you the way"
This carried on throughout the consultation which she also sat in on aswell. "Will he have a blood test now". It was quite funny but I was a little put out by the fact that she didn't bring me a cup of tea. Still that was all over fairly quickly and the test results showed that I've got Hepatitis E. Apparently I picked it up in India around Kolkata or Delhi. So that country managed to give me one last huge slap in the face 6 six weeks after the leaving the place. So it's pretty much gone from the system now and all I have to do is take it easy, go back for another test in a month and not drink for 4-6 weeks. Phewww that was a relief.
So this took up about a week of my exhile in Bangkok. I decided to stay for a while longer though as some of the guys I travelled with in Laos and Cambodia were coming to Bangkok before heading South. I also thought it would be rude not to see some of the sights before leaving. Fortunately my enthusiasm for sightseeing wavered as I stepped out into the heat. I decided to take pictures of places from the outside and then headed back home.
I also managed to meet up with my old flatmate Barry from Uni and his wife for a couple of days and saw a bit more of the city with them. This included the infamous Patpong district where anything goes for a few hundred Baht. I spent the last evening with the guys from Laos at a swanky bar on top of the state building in Bangkok. We had an amazing view from the open air rooftop sipping cocktails and socialising with the top brass of the city. We had two drinks and were broke after that and in true student Backpacker fasion we made them last till the end!
I'm now in Siem Reap (Cambodia) to see the Temples of Ankor and then heading back thorugh the rest of Cambodia to Vietnam. Being in Bangkok for two weeks has meant that I've got to cut short the islands in Thailand but cest la vie!
I'll upload some pics later.
Adios
Will
