Will's NZ adventures
Well this week was all about the weekend!!
I left work on Friday and jumped into the van and head off to the hill....literally!! :) After a 2hour drive down what they call a motor way - but we'd call it an A road at best!! I arrived at the camp site, on the way though I came across a view down the coast which was stunning!! Just as the sun was going down you could see for miles of beach line and cliffs and islands! AMAZING!! So after the view and a cheeky KFC I arrived at the camp site and I was excited to test out all my hard work on the van. I set up the bed (for the first time) and it blew up perfectly in the space - thank god!! haha I drew the curtains and wrapped up. IT WAS COLD!!!!!!!!! But I woke up and ran to the shower block and then I went for a walk on the beach to blow away the cob webs. The beach was seemingly endless with only 2 people on it!! These people don't realise what they have here - I'd be up every morning for a run along it!! Any way after my amazement I set off on the road again....After near enough 3 hours I arrived at the base of the mountain! On the way it was flat with just this one mountain sticking up out of the ground - how did that happen in nature?!?! It has a snowy peak and trees down the sides....just like off the TV! So I parked up and looked at the guide map and decided to go the wrong way to start with to see 'Dawson Falls'. Good choice. You know on TV they always say the amazing force of water falls - yes I totally agree and this was only a small one in comparison! The noise and power was awesome!
So after a few mug shots I headed up the rugged path towards the summit! The track started on rocks and mud but quickly turned into abit of a serious off road route with knee high snow and icy rocks! I was glad I bought my walking boots a couple of weeks ago!! I didn't see or hear any body else the whole way I was walking!!
So I made good progress and then all of a sudden the weather changed. The blue sky turned into grey clouds and the wind picked up! I could hear all your sensible voices in my head - and I bravely turned around and headed down fast! I think this was a good choice because with in 2mins the snow started and the wind got worse again! So I made it back safely and cooked hot soup to warm up and planned my route to the next campsite!
My second camping night went abit better - I knew a routine now and wrapped up better and I slept like a baby - right up till 7 which is amazing for me even in my own bed!! So I decided to just hit the road hard and get back home! 4 hours on the road and I was home! :)
The van was perfect!! Abit bouncy over the 'motor way' bumps haha but didn't put a foot wrong and I only put $90 - which is £45 of diesel in for the whole trip which was pretty much 600 miles I think! I did some washing got some bread in and I'm going to hit the sack with a film ready for a fresh week of work!
Phewww what a weekend :) :) - makes it all worth while and was the whole reason I wanted to come here :)
