What a beutifull city and place prague is.
its got this strange mix of having a deep long history but yet being one of the newest countries of our world, a fledgling at around 16 years old.
The beer is some of the best in the world, with the original Pilsner and Budvar originating here. Its well nice, and at around a Euro a pint its a freekin bargain. When drinking out, it works out cheaper than water which costs 33Krown .20l whereas Straponenamen beer at 25krown .5l - That means the water is 3 times more expensive than beer!!!! another interesting yet uncoroborated fact is that technically they dont class beer as alcohol here with it being Europes largest consumer of beer perhaps that makes sense.
We visited all the sights on the usual free walking tours which were great, and tried the local dishes. Had the Goulash for lunch yesterday, rockin in at 5Euro for a large beer and plate of goulash, beef stew with dumplings, which was very nice indeed, if not slightly salty and perhaps stewing stake. For dinner that night we met up with a couple of Kates friends from Home, Hayley and Matt whom showed us to a little restaurant away from the city center.
This relativly small place had thee most amazing menu for its diversity and price. Kate ordered the Mixed flavoured Ribs which came with a couple dips also. It cost just under 5Euro and must of been around 6 of the largest pork ribs possible. Although craving some of the meaty meaty platters the Czechs are so fond of, such as the mixed plate of chicken, ribs, pork and beef stake plates, i felt obliged to go a lil further afield in my selection. Several page turns later i discovered a game section and was delighted to find the Wild boar pouch stuffed with walnut and apple, served in a plum sauce. Jackpot, and throw in a side of the house style mash potato.
Several beers later, in fact 2 hours later our food came and we tucked in. Very nice it was too! The price tag of around 10Euros for my beers, delicious food and good company made the establishment very highly rated in my eyes and im willing to overlook the 2hour wait, to which matt will atest is not normal.
Overall, Czech is a really awesome place. The Vibe is quite Fresh and very open for foreigners as tourism here is rife. However, its been managed very thougtfully with the most importance placed on preserving the buildings of, amongst others, Gothic, Renaissance and Roccoco styles. The Cathedral here is probably thee best ive seen thus far and sadly we didnt find time to go inside. It was started in around 1000AD and only finished around 1920, today restoration work is a long ongoing process! Of course having taken around 1000years to complete one can imagine the mixture of styles gone into the build, yet i feel it has an overall gothic feel. It is this Gothic architechture in such abundance around Prague that makes it so unique in my eyes. Standing in the middle of some squares sometimes feels like you are at disney land... with the spires of churches styled in the typical medeival gothic tall windey spikey conical styles as imagined in fairytales and seen in Shrek and the likes! Its great, imagine how good it all is after spending 10Euros that day for great meaty food and world class but cheap beer.
I have to add here, i feel it will be sad when Czech finally joins the Euro. Prices will rise and a lot of this will then be lost as has been seen elsewhere. Same goes for Hungary.
On a closing note, sadly last night Kate and I had our Mp3 players stolen! Essentially we didnt have them safely locked away, instead opting for the out of obvious sight option, covering them on a windowsill only accessable from our bunkbeds. This hostel didnt have the large underbed lockers large enough for our backpacks and the smaller lockers just dont cut it for the entirity of our valuables, of which our bags rockin it at over 100pounds each are some of thee most valuable. Because of this we got lazy and paid the price. Thankfully on the whole trip this has been our only serious loss and at 40 and 50pounds each it wasnt as serious as it could of been. Lesson learnt the softest of the hardways in our eyes. Just hope it was some underpaid and poor hungarian cleaner that swiped em rather than the Drunken American guys who left that morning!
Mat out.
