Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls
We arrived in the town of Jasper quite late at night and were immediately able to do some wildlife spotting - an Elk on the driveway to our accommodation! We then went into town for dinner where I sampled local Canadian food - a Bison Steak which was a bit like beef only leaner!
The following morning the Sunshine & Showers weather we had been having was replaced by typically English weather - drizzle. This did not deter us as we went to our first stop of the day - the Maligne River. Here we hiked for about 1 hour to see where the river runs down from a slot canyon with several waterfalls and rapids along the way.
The next stop was Lake Maligne. I was quite up for the 9km hike all the way around but no one else seemed up for it (need to get fit for Peru!) especially as it had started raining again at this point. We did have a short walk round before going into the visitors centre where I got even wetter from the dodgy taps in the bathroom and got to have my picture taken with a bear - unfortunately not a real one!
The afternoon was free time in the town of Jasper. This is a cute little town with a lovely backdrop of the Rockies from most views! It also has the best bakery I've encountered on my trip to Canada (is it just me or does this blog revolve around what I've eaten?). There were lots of touristy shops here although I was very restrained!
That evening we got to go the Thermal Springs. These are natural springs which are supposed to help ease aches and pains as well as improve circulation - pretty good when you've just fallen off a horse. The springs consisted of a really cold pool (13C), a warm pool (32C) and a hot pool (47C). I spent most of my time in the warm pool as the hot was too hot, although did do a couple of swims from one end of the cold pool to the other to get the blood flowing! On the way to and from the hot springs we also saw some wildlife - 2 more elk but unfortunately no more bears!
