Well here we were in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, 365 days sunshine a year they told us. Not quite, the day we arrived it was absolutely pi**ing down and was the coldest day recorded in 9 years. We walked arround the town and the beach in the rain. The town itself was very different from the other resort towns. Really built up with tall apartment and hotel blocks, just like CSI Miami except it was raining and the police weren't ginger.
That night we drowned our sorrows with a few beers at the on site vegas bar, follwed by a small pub tour including Cocktails and Dreams and an Irish bar. The hostel we were staying it was well equiped with squash, tennis and swimming pool. Making use of the facilities Drew easily beat me at squash before our resulting squash arse hindered the quality of tennis on show the next morning; not to mention restricting my already limited range of movement for at least 5 days. I never mentioned it once though, suffering silence all that time.
Undeterred by the wind, rain and cold temperatures we boldly set off for a surf lesson at the spit. Well the sea was ferocious and it was hard just to stand up in the waves never mind on the board. Well warned about getting the board caught between you and the wave I was the first of the class to be upended by my flying board, much to the amusement of Drew and Hannah.
Drew was by far the early front runner standing up on the first go, shortly followed by Laura. I managed a couple before the break and Hannah was standing for her last two waves of the lesson. All of us achieved our goal and went home happy. The next day we were off to Brisbane and surely some better weather....
