So been in the south island now for a week or so, you travel round so fast you forget what you have done!
On arrival into Wellington the place was awash with people in the most outrageous fancy dress outfits, all in aid of the Rugby Sevens. didnt mean a great deal to me, the guys were all very excited about the whole thing! The after a few days in Welly I got the ferry across to reach Picton in the south island. The south isalnd seems much mkre relaxed, which doesnt really seem possible! Also the home of the vineyards, we have my name written all over them! So did a spot of wne tasting before arriving into a town called Nelson. Nelson being most famous for its Abel Tasman national park. On one of the days in Nelson we decided to see what all the hype about this national park was. So arrived at the entrance of the park in which you then have to get a 'water taxi' along the coast to one of the many bays. By pure luck on the way there we came across a group of dolphins. So we stopped to watch the swim around the boat, dancing, jumping and having so much fun. Was amazing to see them like that, especially as you were not expecting it, just all part of the journey! Doesnt quite happen like that in a taxi in London!
The we got dropped off at the shore of Bark Bay, with absolutely stunning golden beaches and crystal clear water, you really cant beat it. Then you start th trek back the same way you came, but on land this time, all 7hrs of it! Some areas were so remote, you wonder how the people that are luckily enough to live there ever found it. The water looks so beautiful when you walk around you cant help but jump in for a swim, which i seem to do at every given opportunity these days. You cant resist! The track takes you through the thick of the forest on the coast line, all along the winding baths, then there will be an opening of amazing views overlooking the park and coast. Needless to say we were exhausted on return, but all worth it.
Then heading south again, all along the west coast, arrving at a town called Westport. Anoth town another activity. This time in the form of Jet Boating! This is a very powerful boat with huge horse power, that glides along really shallow waters, as shallow as 10 cm. Which means that you can get really close to the edge of the Buller River, that we were on. Started as a gentle cruise along the river to get use to the boat and to find out what it is all about. Then the fun begins! Going at speed of over 50mph along the, heading straight towards rock faces or obsticles in the way, then turning at the very last second, as the boat just glides over the water! Very nerve racking, but immense fun! Then of course there is the showing off with 360 degree turns on the water at the speed of lightening, someting this style of boat is renowned for, and very good at!All in the name of fun!
