Our second morning in the camper so happened to also be the second morning where I woke up with my head jammed between the mattress of the bed and the kitchen worksurface. Quite sore that, but these things happen when the bed is that little bit too small. After removing the head (in one piece, so no worries!) and taking the obligatory communal shower, off we went to the open road once more.
The scenery here is absolutely amazing. It's a bit like Scotland.. sorry, a lot like Scotland, but 10 times bigger! It really does take your breath away, so dirving through it has been a pleasure..
Stopping off for breakfast beside a river we were driving past, we had a very relaxing morning which is more than overdue, but as we managed to cover over 300 miles today, we weren't exactly doing nothing! Heading for Christchurch we made a good few stops on the way to stretch our legs and also escape from the 'Best of Scotland' CD recently purchased to prevent the silence due to the lack of any good radio here. As if that was not good enough for £5, we got a bonus 'Best of Ireland' with it so we can listen to both 'I belong to Glasgae' and 'Danny Boy' must to Louises dismay!
We also made a stop in the largest settlement we had come across by that point at Hakitika, a small town which served as a hub to the surrounding area. It was also home to the largest number of jade jewellery shops you have ever seen! With frightening flashbacks of being prayed upon in such shops in India, we scarpered quickly after a nice walk along the beach and visit to the supermarket!
We arrived in Christchurch around 6pm so given the fact it is winter here, it was pitch black. Undeterred we made our way to the city centre and saw some amazing things we hadn't seen since arriving in the country: a dual carriageway (honest! 2 lanes of traffic!), a Subway sandwich shop (may have been an oasis?) and even houses made out of brick rather than wood like everwhere else! Despite these amazing things, the attractions totalled a cathedral, a tram and loads of souvenir shops. Check. We did them all!
Caravan site located, we checked in for the night and sat down to dinner and wi-fi internet access.. Luxury.
Whale watching tomorrow. Best get some sleep so we don't blink and miss them!
