To try to describe today in one word would be impossible. Mainly down to the fact we are so tired to even think about which one to choose, but also down to the variety of what we have seen in the last 24+ hours! After the 12 hour journey to get to Delhi (8 hours of which was spent sitting beside an Indian in a Celtic strip!), we arrived on time this morning at 6am to be greeted by an interesting immigration department complete with mice running across the floor! A sign of things to come..?
The trip to our hotel was every bit a white knuckle ride, and the roads here are CRAZY! The room was good once we arrived though, and after a 2 hour power nap we headed out on our half day tour of the city. Picked up by Danesh (or Dennis as we initially called him), we were taken to see the majestic sights of the President's Palace and Parliament building. After learning about the entire history of the country in 10 easy installments we were then taken to Humayun's Tomb, built for this emperor by his wife, and later to be used as the bue-print for the Taj which we visit tomorrow. It was huge and quite a sight to behold in the middle of the bustle of this city of 15 million people!
A visit to the Qutab Minar was quick to follow and this 72m high structure which was 1600 years old was unbelievable. Built as an observatory, it has actually lost 2 storeys over the years but was still the biggest monument in the country.
Long day, but a brilliant start to the journey. Off for dinner now in the hotel restaurant which has 200 types of chutney apparently before trying to catch up on some much needed ZZZs
