Wow. We're knackered. Not every day you managed to get up early, spend all morning in a city, catch an 11 hour flight at 5.30, arrive 5 and a half hours before you left and then spend the afternoon adjusting to the new city/country/continent you just arrived in!
Our day started about a week ago I think when we woke up in Auckland. Our last showerblock experience was about as sentimental as watching a wedding on Eastenders, and we were soon packed and ready for a rapid assault on the city! Now Auckland is by population the size of Glasgow, so loads to do you'd think? Hmm.. 1 thing to do actually.. get yourself up the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere! Completely dwarfing the surrounding buildings, the Skytower is quite a sight from the ground up even before you get into the rapid, and glass bottomed, lift which takes you to the observation deck at 196m in 40 seconds! Once at the top the view is stunning and the size of the city was much more evident. Slightly offputting though was the sway you could feel in the strong wind!
After a while on the observation deck, we mad our way up to the sky deck at 220m above the streets below which added to all of the above sensations. As if being inside a glass deck wasn't scary enough from here there were idiots walking round the roof outside and others JUMPING OFF IT!! YES - All the way to the ground from the 198m drop!!
Remembering that I had a threading the camel through the eye of a needle job ahead in the form of maneouvering the camper van out of a city centre car park (7.2m long. That's a lot when you think of the size of a car!) we left the tower and went to the huge marina for a spot of lunch. After saying goodbye to the camper, we made our way to the airport to stand in a queue for check in for 1.5 hours and then board a shoe-box sized seat for the next 11 hours!
Our arrival in Chile got the excitement going again as we raced through the streets in our taxi. The city is ultra-modern in places and looks almost European at times. A few hours kip later and a quick look round had, we booked our hire car for tomorrow (oh yeah!!) and enjoyed dinner before retreating to catch up on the serious lack of sleep from today/yesterday/the real yesterday!
hable con ustedes otra vez mañana
