Packup and a quick bush tucker session eating the bums of green ants (slightly different to the green ants at home) with Adam our Neighbour before a sad goodbye for girls to head to Mornington Wilderness Camp. This was a radio in at the shack at the front gate job - only to find in a place that apparently doesn’t take bookings that they’re booked out till next Thursday. Disappointed, but booked in after a convoluted 2way conversation to go back and hire two canoes for a day trip to Dimond Gorge on Monday (yep that spelling is correct). Onto Channerly Ck Wilderness Camp which was closed (sigh) ,,,, so set course for Mt Barnett which was our next intended stop after MWC anyway. Mt Barnett roadhouse a hive of activity, where you pay exorbitant prices for everyday items- $10 for a bag of pegs...and no beer much to Matty’s disgust. Things are starting to look grim, he may have to stoop to drinking Gin?! Checked in to Manning Gorge campsite for four nights and tried out the dodgy 3G wireless to catch up on few emails and texts- in other words to find out each boy’s soccer team score for the week!
Nice bush campsite with a hike to toilets so will be a fair few bush wees outside our trailer as we’re all too lazy to make the trek. Have to forage for some wood tomorrow if we want a fire now.
Have been looking forward to Manning Gorge as the place you can swim in the river at the campground and it didn’t disappoint. After paying almost $90 to feed the family lunch at the roadhouse (an excuse to do some more v slow emailing.... still waiting for insurance co. to cough up for trailer recovery and repairs) we headed back to campsite for a dip. Kids went in and tried out the hand pull river crossing boat setup several thousand times, Stu now rocking a noodle for our peace of mind but mainly as we are not that flash at treading water and holding up a 6yo lump under a waterfall! Really nice afternoon swim, river beach had plenty of sand as we kicked back and watched kids swimming. Apparently there has been a freshwater croc sitting a bit upstream all day, but he’s obviously got sense enough not to be territorial about the campsite swimming ‘pool.’ So nice to be able to swim every afternoon we are here, starting to really unwind now. Quick chat to the olds today was reassuring that everything ok on home front except no rain yet. Enjoyed a dinner with some steamed broccoli we bought at the roadhouse - what a treat?! Heard about a ‘bush doughnut’ recipe that we may try tomorrow involving white bread folded with jam inside, then dipped in pancake mix to fry - yum ...we have eggs again!
