After a bit of a long still night listening to the resident bats flap between our shady trees overhead, we commenced doing very little for the day. The big boys and Matt were booked onto a fishing charter after lunch which only had 3 spots available, so some disgruntlement and negotiations ensued about who was going and how we were going to make it up to those that missed out. I happily spent the morning sitting up at the washing machine and speaking to Mum and Ali which was lovely. Caretaker Matt freely gives out the ph number so others can call in which made life very easy. This guy is a volunteer caretaker, here from qld for some introspection which was available in abundance over the wet season as he was cut off from Kalumburu for a month at a time. Luckily he was handy with a bow and could help himself to the local wild cattle which he ingeniously winched up from his troopie! On a quick walk along the high tide beach we were lucky enough to see a few large turtles come in quite close to shore, which was pretty cool once we’d worked out they weren’t crocs!
Mummy handed out screens when the fishermen left and had some quiet time. The oldest fisherman was a little apprehensive about his motion sickness on the boat so I wasn’t sure how it would go. We paddled a bit at the rock pools once the tide got low enough and watched a lady pull in a shark over a metre long from the beach which was just what Stu needed to see to seal the no swimming deal. We enjoyed another colourful sunset as we awaited our fresh fish dinner.
The fishermen did not disappoint and had a cracking time all afternoon, Cam reeled in a shark much to his delight, Matt couldn’t believe how easily they netted for bait off the beach after he got sacked trawling off the back of the boat. They dropped their lines down at three different reefs and pulled in fish after fish, (predominantly red snapper which was beautiful) and boys are now dedicated fishermen dreaming of saving up for their own rods. We will ‘wind’ it back to the hand reels and dole out some more realistic fishing experiences before that happens!
