Our first stop was outside of Mobile and we did a slight detour the next morning to see Biloxi. I was assuming this would be akin to the low country, beautiful homes, gardens, historic preservation. There is a reason I have no acompanying pictures. As we entered the city, I thought we were in Las Vegas. Casinos, neon signs, fast food, ugly. A couple of miles further, we saw a more residential area....with lots of commercial real estate signs. There was Beauvoir, Jeff Davis's home that was destroyed by Katrina. I remember seeing it on the news. It was in the process of being rebuilt but nothing else around it was, hence all of the for sale signs. We saw the foundations of many homes and lots of driveways, leading nowhere, to nothing. Keep in mind that the Gulf is right across the street. We heard so much about New Orleans and this hurricane but Bixoli, except for the casinos, looks decimated. I am not sure how it will ever recover from this destruction.
On to Houston and a great visit with our Indy friends, Jim and Bari DuBois and then a long haul to Big Bend Park, in west Texas.
