Greetings, Things have been a big quiet in the last ten days or so. Spanish Market, and open air event on the Plaza, was a bit of a disappointment. Not much in the way of crowds and they seem to diminsh each year. We have played some golf and spent some time with our friends who happen to live here. Marty also went zip lining with his cousin, Ron who lives here. I decided to not participate. They went to the ski trails north of Taos. I have a couple of great photos of Marty suspended 300 feet above ground, hanging on and not looking down. He loved it and will do it again, but would like new scenery.
We enjoyed the Caldera so much that when our Indy/Florida friends, the Hovdes, arrived, we decided to go back and show it to them. We have not seen them in four and a half years and, boy, have we had a lot to catch up on. It is like we were never apart. Ali and Boyd were a bit concerned about the length of the drive of our road trip because they are reknowned for not traveling anywhere for more than two hours a day. They seemed to get into it, especially when we arrived for lunch at the biker bar in Jemez Springs. This tiny town, with four restaurants, three galleries and two places to spend the night is about fifteen miles past the Caldera. There is nothing else here, except, I forgot, the American Legion Hall. Its main reason for existing is because of the nearby hot springs, a result of all the volcanic activity. On the return trip, Boyd commented about the clouds, the rocks and the weather, so it appeared that he has gotten into the Western environment.
David and Brenda Waldron arrive on Wednesday. We have tickets for the opera Oscar, which, unfortunately, got panned by the critics. We will also attend a chamber music performance and hopefully take a drive up to Taos. It is a beautiful trip and I am hoping, after having been there numerous times, that we can see a couple of museums and enjoy the work of the Taos artists, who resided in the area starting around WWI, attracted the native cultural and terrific light. Their work is a major portion of the Eiteljorg Museum collection in Indianapolis.
Check in periodically because on Sunday the Waldrons and Klapers head out for our second road trip, visiting the Four Corners area again but focusing on Native American sites, such as Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon and Monument Valley. The internet connection will be spotty but will try to report as we have time. We are taking a case of wine to enjoy in the evenings so that may be a factor in how much typing and uploading of photos I am able to do.
