One thing I love about the USA is the live music and as Austin is dubbed the musical captical of the world it is no wonder that it has been the best for music so far. Pretty much every bar on 6th street, in other words every building, has a band of some kind or another playing. Most of them are cover bands but its still brilliant. We have really been enjoying Austin. Yesterday we went to a palce called Barton Springs which is a river which has been dammed, this has created a stretch of the river which is pretty much a huge swimming pool. We spent the morning here and then hired a kayak and kayaked down the river itself, it feels great to be active and we are both looking forward to Yosemite. Spent the night a a bar called Dizzy Rooster which sold bottles of bud for $1. Went to another Hooters, some lovely girls at this one. Creepy guy near us talking to a bar maid though, pretended he knew one of them. Clearly a serial killer, Brown you and Antz would have loved him. It is Sams 23rd birthday today, the old geezer is starting to cramp my style. We decided to do and bit of shopping. Spent ages looking for a boot store called Allens Boots and walked miles. Found it eventually though and we both bought some genuine cowboy boots. The plan tonight is to go to one of the gig bars which host original bands, long walk in new boots will be painful but worth it. We visited the Captiol Building in Austin which looks a little bit like the white house but is much bigger. Had a painted picture of my heroe George W inside. We are heading to San Antonio tomorrow to see the Alamo and to El Paso after that before moving onto New Mexico. Porivsionally planned out the rest of the trip. After New Mexico, we head to Arizona, through Nevada, up the California cost and right up to the top of the west coast visiting Portland, Oregon and Seattle. We were considering flying to Alaska but won't have the time now and probably not the money either. Having a brilliant time. Have just over a month left which doesn't seem enough as there is so much to visit, still have a month in Japan after that though so can't complain.
Update: Just back from night out. Went to a place called Emo's. Lots of crazies on the street tonight. Three bands played at Emo's, all post rock. All insturmentals and no lyrics which is cool as I like post rock bands. Couple of observations. All Americans seem to drive pick up trucks even though they have nothing in the back. American guys think it is cool to wear caps backwards, I remember thinking that was a good look when I was 5. Americans rarely leave their cars, they have drive thru atm machines and post boxes. Eddie and I get funny looks when we walk anywhere altough that might possibly be because lately we look like homeless people or Hobnobs as we have now dubbed them.
