Arrived in Chennai (Madras) at 9:00AM. The first leg of our journey up north wasn't too bad. Headed somehwhere for brwakfast shortly (very shortly) after arrival. Immediately whisked up to the AC private VIP room and waited on by a team of four, which obviously included the manager. Not that we wanted that... After breakfast we caught a domestic train across town for 5p - not the pain the tube causes. We explored Fort St.George and were quite impressed by the museum of colonial rule, and consequently independence. Got the to main station and had a small thali for lunch and plaued uno on the concourse floor with an Indian lad to kill time. Someone started photographing us and another warned us it might be to gather evidence against us if we were gambling. We stopped playing. Don't fancy a night banged up in Madras for playing Uno. We began our 30 hour journey to Kolkata - the doors are brilliant fun to hang out of at 60mph. The back end ofadrad harboured some awul sights though, a mixture of industrial factorys, power plants and their surrounding shanti town armies of labourers. How lucky we really are.

The thirty hour behemoth og a train journey wasn't actually too bad - cpuld have done with a bit more space though. Indians are age also seem to be massively drawn to playing Uno with us - literally played a hundred times. Never want to see that game again. We arrived in kolkata at 10PM - an absolute colossus of a place. The poverty here is overwhelming people literally sleep on the streets just outside our hostel.

This morning we walked to the Victorian memorial palace - it exhibits fantastic architecture; a cross between the Taj and St.Pauls cathedral. Not that we have, or are claiming to have, any clue about architecture! Explores the acres of gardens before a quick look in the ironically named st. Pauls cathedral. On the way home, after Josh had to deal with a small girl grappling on his leg and demanding money, we ducked into a small shopping mall to see the way Indians go to town! Tiny little shops littered the place. They either sold silk or mobile phone covers. Addidas and Levis were cheap -shame we have no space.

Paula and Martin Fascinating account of a place Martin and I will never see. Take care and keep on with the Uno!
