Kate,Jo and Bronagh Get Around
Hello Everybody
Sorry we havn't updated in a bit, but we've spent the last two weeks kiwi-grading and didn't think you would be up for a day-by-day analysis.
So last week we had to say goodbye to Claire and Laura but that wasn't before we had one last weekend with them. After work on Friday we all got dolled up for a big night out at the local cinema (1 screen, 12 people). We went to see the DaVinci Code , which we were not impressed with at all. Terrible. Tom Hanks was not the sexy Robert Langdon we all expected. So to cheer ourselves up on Saturday we went for a spot of Quad-biking. Once we had all been kitted out in helmets and wellies, and Jo had been put on her special bike (she couldn't quite grasp how to use the normal ones, bless), we set off into the countryside. We went through rivers (puddles) and down big hills (mole hills), following a sixty year old farmer who didn't trust us at all. But we were like the class rebels and hung about at the back doing cool stuff like wheelspins and handbrake turns. Cos we're mad like. And it was actually really good. We had a bit of a party that night at the hostel to say goodbye to Claire and Laura. They left on Tuesday morning for South America, so we were all very sad. But they're coming to Ireland in the summer for a big night out so we'll see them soon.
After that it was back to work for another week at the kiwi factory - somebody has to put bread on the table. We basically stand at a conveyor belt for 8hours (12 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays), watching kiwis roll past, chuck out the bad ones, and put 75 in a box. You just don't appreciate the amount of work that goes into providing you people with perfectly formed kiwis. You just take it all for granted. But we did make some good friends out of it, aside from the French and a grumpy old woman called Hilary. Emily and Grace from Malaysia were our favourites. Grace came round to the hostel one night and taught us (Kate) how to cook chinese food. She is now an expert at fried rice, chicken curry and spring rolls. And we now have fried rice for dinner every single night. Well, it makes a change from pasta.
We did have a bit of a mental night that week though. We decided to go meet some people from work, and ended up in the most bizarre house ever. It was like an old art museum that had been turned into a squatters. Everyone was reading poetry and talking about the meaning of life. It was funny for a while, but when a scary punk called Zebedee came over, sat himself down, and started telling us how his tattoo (he had his bones tatooed on his hands, like an X-ray, and lots of flames)were symbolical of "the death of the former me, coming into the light of a new world", we decided it was time to go.
On Monday morning we sadly had to say goodbye to Jo, who is heading back to Ireland to get our drinks ready. We miss her loads, but we had so much fun - and her spirit goes on in a Ted Baker sock but.
So we're in Kaikoura now, our last stop on the South Island It was very sad leaving Sue, Robert and Maycol in Bakers Lodge - it was like our second home! But we figured its about time we actually do some travelling.
Talk to you soon
