Sat 16 Aug. Up early to get out of town quick! Drove to Knysna and found an apartment at the waterfront for a bargain rate (well it is winter here and 'off-peak'). We stayed here for five nights, chilled out: Max played tennis with a couple of local boys, thanks to coach Debbie. A favourite restaurant was 34 Degrees South, which of course is the latitude of Knysna -therein lies a great geography/maths lesson! We visited Knysna elephant park (for elephants orphaned, often from ivory poachers)
On our way to the next stop at Jeffery's Bay we visited a monkey sanctuary, stopped at Bloukran's bridge, from beneath which it is possible to bungy jump (world's highest at 215m, Floss wanted to, but of course children aren't allowed). We also visited Storms River Mouth, which is where the Storms River meets the sea from a deep canyon. Dark moody place!
We arrived at JB quite late, but checked into a very comfortable guest house facing the super tubes beach, famous for its superb surf: Clean consistent barrels up to approx. 7ft high. The best surf was on the day we arrived and there were approx 8 or 9 surfers in the water, if this was Newquay, it would have been really crowded!
We stayed for two nights and saw a pod of dolphins surfing the break each morning before breakfast. Visited Kragga Kamma Game reserve, saw rhino, giraffe, cheetah and buffalo. On our second evening we ate at 'Walskipper' fish restaurant, right on the beach with a sand floor, wine served in tin mugs, eat off tin plates, the food was fantastic, very atmospheric.
Sat 23 Aug to Port Elizabeth for a tennis lesson, which turned into a weekend of wonderful hospitality including a braai (bbq) on Saturday night. Special thanks to Piet & Barbara Snyman.
