We are Sailing
Today really was a very lazy day. Given the fact we were cycling all yesterday, and then our late night at the Moulin Rouge (anything past 8pm is a late night), we were having to wake up knowing that our red wine wasn't hiding the pain of our sore muscles and limbs. But the girls were good. They somehow managed to put together another great breakfast, albeit rather slowly.
We hadn't actually planned anything today, but we received a call from Kane and Kirsten and we all decided to meet for lunch. Brock was off to the gym. Yeah right, who would go to a gym while they are on holidays. Good on Brock.
We decided to wait for Kane and Kirsten outside. It was a little warm waiting in the sun, so we decided to test the beer out at the bar across the road near the train station. I am pleased to say the beer was very tasty and it seems the champagne was just as good. As we started , Kane and Kirsten arrived, so Kane joined us. Kirsten is back on rations as she is training for her world cup meet in a weeks time. She seems to politely disagree with the training program I suggested for her. I mean it has worked wonders on Brian's flu, and even Dianne is showing signs of recovery.
After a quick chat it was off to a place called Place de Vosges, which is a 29 minute walk. Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris, and one of the finest in the city. It is 140m x 140 m, and was inaugurated in 1612 with a Grand Carrousel to celebrate the wedding of Louis X111 and Anne of Austria.
29 mins doesn't seem a long time. It is only 1.1 Kilometres. Lets go! App in hand, Kane knows how to use it. Brian's got a map, (you can see where this is leading already can't you). Yep, we got lost. First, we ran out of wireless, and my Telstra Air is still not working. Brian had a map, and of course reading French is simple, for the French. Still, there is so much to see on the way, I was able to tune out to the mumbling behind me. We got there eventually, in time for a late lunch.
When we sat down to lunch, we had time to soak up the beauty of the place, and simply admire the stonework around and above us. Not only is it magnificent masonry craftsmanship, it has been there for 400 + years. I would like to see a Dale Alcock home in 400 years! There was not a stone out of place. Everything was perfectly symmetrical.
I took some photo's of each of us. I hope you don't my but I photo shopped the one of Cheryl and I. I am pretty chuffed really, as I did this using my google air brushing tool. people just don't realise how quickly I pick things up.
Well after a great lunch it was time to find our way back. Giving consideration to the fact that we are flying out on Wednesday, we thought we would not walk back. Kane decided to teach us to use the Metro. We were keen to learn of course, because there is one right outside our apartment. Kane is a very good teacher, we learnt how to use the machine (in fluent English) how to read the maps with all the multi coloured dots and lines on it. (I recall knowing it as snakes ladders in my youth) How to work out stops and which door to go though. There were four of us, and we soaked up everything like a sponge. Kane took us home, no hitches at all. This Metro is great stuff. We should have tackled it earlier, as Dianne's shin would still be in one piece.
Kane and Kirsten continued on back to their place, to catch up with Brock. We had arranged to meet them all in the Latin Quarter tonight.
We came back to the unit, and relaxed with a couple of G&T's and a beer or so. I did some bookwork and Cheryl some washing, Dianne was sleeping off her flu, and Brian was sleeping of his?? (I can't find an excuse for him except old age, but I had better not mention that)
Later that night we again tried Uber to the Latin Quarter, and again it was very good. The area is called the Latin Quarter as Latin was the spoken language (a good example is cha cha cha)
The Latin Quarter began with the Romans who built a theatre, amphitheatre, forum, thermal baths, and roads in the area. Some of the most famous and well known places in the world are located here. Such as the school for underprivileged children established in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon, the Pantheon and K-Mart.
The place was a hive of activity, and a pleasure to be in. Kane, Kirsten and Brock turned up late, because Brock was sleeping his gym work. Brock save time like I do and just sleep. We had a beautiful meal at one of the restaurants, with a really good guitarist busking on the street. The best lamb chops outside of Greece. It did not take long for the night to go. More so because we lose track of time due to the long twilight. We could not have asked for better weather, around 23 degrees C.
It was time to go once again, except this time we will be saying goodbye to Kane, Kirsten, and Brock. Cheryl and I were so happy we could catch up. How often can you say to your kids, "Yeah no worries, I'll meet you in Paris for a meal" They are off to Bordeaux, and then they will gradually make there way to Kirsten championships. Good luck Kirsten!
We finally made it back to the apartment quite late. Holidays are quite exhausting are they?
Tomorrow will be the trip to Versailles. Looking forward to it.
