Wanderlusting Linley
Up and off to Mesa Verde for the tour we'd postponed the day before. This is a *really* fascinating place and I’d encourage anyone to do this. It’s an ancient Puebloan cliff palace and the tour takes you right through it. They lived there from around 600 – 1300 AD. The tour only costs $3 once you’re in the park and I have an annual pass to all the US National Parks. Very economical of me.
Then it was on the road again back to Utah. With a quick stop at Four Corners. OK, it is the cheesiest and most touristy thing you can possibly do, but we were going right past so it had to be done. The only place in America where four states meet in a proper corner, hence the dazzlingly brilliant and creative name. I planted a foot and a hand in each state and got my photo taken thusly.
This is all on reservation land so imagine my elation when driving through these parts and I see mustangs in the fields!!
Driving around America is so easy, especially small town America. Take a left out of Cortez. Near Four Corners, turn right. When you get to Bluff, turn left. Follow that all the way to Monument Valley. I mean, it really couldn’t be any easier. Yes, it helps that I’ve been to some of these places before, but not all of them. It’s so straightforward. Anyone could do this. And everyone should.
Monument Valley was as stunning as last time I saw it. Only this time I was spending the night there with the mother of all views from the balcony. I once again broke my promise to not take the Dodgem Car off-road and took it down onto the floor of the valley. They really need to do something about that road... How we got in and out of there without flattening all the tyres remains a mystery to me. The Yank says it’s because I’m a really good driver but I think we all know how debatable that is.
One drawback to Monument Valley is that you’re kind of a captive audience when it comes to meals. If you’re staying there, your options are somewhat limited. You either drive out of the valley and back up to Mexican Hat, or eat on site. We ate on site and paid Australian prices for the meals but to their credit, the food was good. I try to eat local where ever I go so I have the full experience. Turns out Navajo bread is really nice!! Ate until we were stuffed then took the leftovers to have in the car the next day. But not before we ran down into the valley floor after dinner with the camera and some flashlights and laughed ourselves silly. There really is nothing quite like being on an utterly stress free vacation and having someone along who loves to live in the moment. There are three things in the world I do particularly well – I know how to rock. I know how to holiday. And I know how to have fun. And I’ve been doing all three to maximum levels of awesome.
Scroll down past the photos and click "Next Entry" as there is more to catch up on. :-)
