HONDURAS 15/03/2008 UNTIL 31/03/2008
In Honduras, we started in Copan, home of an ancient Maya site, surounded by forest and inhabited by colorful parrots. Copan is also a cow boy country. Cities in Honduras are mostly charmless. We headed to Trujillo where we spent a few days. Because of the festivities held during the Santa Semana, transports were paralysed but we enjoyed watching the religious processions. After this busy week, we went to Tocoa but got stucked by two days of heavy rain. And the sun came back, we could take a pick-up to the most isolated area of the country : La Moskitia. After a few hours drive on a dirt road in the forest, crossing rivers and along a long beach, we reached the village of Batalla. There, we board a small motor boat to Rais Ta, an even smaller village with wooden houses. The Moskitia is a very wild area, also known for being a drug place. Here, we regreted that people are not particularly nice or helpful ! After a 10 kilometer walk with our backpacks in a hot and humid weather, we arrived in another village : Rio Platano. We were lucky to get a boat ride to Brus Laguna, which is a small town, with friendly people. But as nothing is simple, we had difficult time trying to find reliable informations. We couldn't find any boat to travel further and the plane bacame the only way to go to Puerto Lempira. We waited 10 hours a plane that never showed up ! The next day, a car drove us to the air strip. A 5 seat plane landed, we were 6 passengers. Thierry sat between two seats ! We enjoyed that flight above the Moskitia. This area is so different, wild and beautiful ! Puerto Lempira was hot, our hotel room was equiped with air conditioning but there was no electricity ! The following day, we found a truck to drive us to the border. The road was very bad, through the forest... Finally, we crossed a river by boat, and headed to Nicaragua...
