WHERE VIV'S AT...
At last, it's stopped raining in Perth, it's Sunday morning and the sun is out again and so is the hangover.
So I'm sure you're all dying to know what happened after the cyclone tour. Well we got back to Perth in the rain and Harry and I were staying at the same hostel (and it's luxury as I've got my own room at last) - after feasting on cheese sandwiches and onions for 10 days we decided that the only sensible thing to do was go for a good dinner off of china plates and have a 'glass' of wine so headed off to Northbridge and Fishy Affair restaurant where we fed Aboriginals on fag butts and was scared to death by a mad french woman called Sonia (who had also been on our tour and probably the one person apart from the lovely Ralph who we'd not really want to spend another minute with).
Thursday and it was raining again so after buying new flipflops as you do when it's raining, we headed off to Freo and what else do you do there in the rain other than check out the local brewery Little Creatures (best beeer in Oz) and what a great place. Basically the brewery is in the pub so you sit there drinking Pale Ale, eating good food and watch them make the beer - very cool and easy to loose yourself for a whole afternoon here, which of course we did.
Feeling a little fuzzy from beer we headed back to Perth to check out the local nightlife and some comedy but could not get in so Harry dragged me kicking and screaming to the next best venue - Perth's only casino - where I proceeded to demonstrate why I never go gambling (I'm a backpacker I should not be here). Needless to say it was tacky and expensive but provided a few laughs esp when Harry put his huge winnings all on black and lost (time to go home we think).
Friday and it's goodbye Harry - after a walk in Kings Park (well you have to be a tourist every now and again) we met Dan and Caroline at the Shed for a final drink together then
Harry left for the airport and I slept (I needed to catch up so badly and be fit for the wine tour the next day).
Swan Valley is about 18ks from the city and Linds had arranged a bus tour for 10 of us and it all started off very nicely indeed at our first visit to Lancaster Winery where I was very impressed with a little number called Lancaster Chenin Blanc so of course I had to buy a bottle. Next winery and the first thing that caught my eye was a display of boxed wine that was going for $5 each - bloody hell the new scampi juice - and, so having my backpacker head on I proceeded to buy two and negotiate the price down to $4 a box(bargin). Happy with my purchases we then had a great lunch and headed to a beer brewery. Things were starting to get a bit messy now as we sampled the local tipple then sampled more. Next, heaven awaited in the form of a chocolate factory - once again I was dragged kicking and screaming (this time out rather than in).
OK wine tour over and what do you do but go drinking of course. We went first to Broken Hill for a few then headed back into the city to this really kisch bar called the Hula Bula Bar. The name itself should give you an idea of the kind of venue we're talking about but just in case you're struggling it's all done out like the South Pacific (yes the entire South Pacific) and people wear silly clothes and grass skirts and flower garlands and sing along to Elvis songs - absolutely brillant and so were the Kontiki Mug cocktails.
Thanks Linds for a great day out - now, I must buy some asprin as I need them before my lunch date and I've heard the Sunday Session in Perth is legendary.
