I arrived in Playa late on Wednesday and headed straight to the balcony with a couple of beers, where people were sat talking. I met Marco (Italian), Darinka (Mexican) and Mitch (American). We talked for a couple of hours before heading out to a bar to try Mezcal, a Mexican drink similar to Tequila. It seems that Playa is a place where the vibe is very much dictated by the weather. Given the cloud and rain, 5th Avenue (which I'm told is usually buzzing with partygoers) was dead. We had our drinks and returned to the hostel. The following day we were up relatively early and heading to the Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) cenotes. We took a colectivo van and managed to miss our stop, so we had to pick up another van going the other way. Once at the cenotes we hired some snorkelling gear and in my case, a life vest so we could swim in the cenote pools. This was an amazing experience. The water was perfectly clear and fresh. There were small fish in the pools which seemed to enjoy biting Marco. We swam in both the cenotes and took some hilarious underwater pictures before heading back to Playa for some delicious tuna empanadas. We met Courtney that evening, an Aussie girl that I had bumped into in Merida. The five of us went to a French cafe and chatted for a couple of hours. I couldn't believe how at ease I felt with this group of people. It felt as if we had known each other for a lot longer than a day and a half. This was exactly the kind of thing that I wanted from my travels.
