Day 26 Anchorage (4thSeptember)
Up early and off to have a good breakfast as we had a 5-hour train trip to Anchorage ahead of us.
We boarded the Cruise train by the dock. This is a domed window train with bench seats facing tables. As it was still dark when we boarded we did not really get a look at Seward (where the ship docked). Another overcast cloudy day did not really allow for us to make the most of windowed train carriage.
On the outskirts of Anchorage, we came across what is known as aeroplane alley. This area is at least 300 metres long consisting of 20 planes parked behind their home. Basically they have a shared grassed runway that runs the length of their combined back yards. This runway is between their homes and the rail line.
Arriving in Anchorage we were bussed to the Egan Hospitality centre. Here we were able to leave our carry-on luggage while we explored downtown Anchorage until we could check into our hotel at 3.15pm.
We walked down to the weekend markets but there were not many stalls as this was the last day of the markets for the summer season. Heading back up to town we headed to the eatery in a local mall. We managed to get some nice tasting Chinese food.
Next, a walk out of downtown to a grocery store to buy some nibbles for the next couple of days with the train and bus trip. We managed to get some exercise (2.2kms each way) on our way to the grocery store.
Checking in we caught up with emails and started to post our blogs. As we had a room with microwave and fridge we decided to go back to the grocery store for dinner and breakfast supplies. The front desk advised us to go to a different store similar distance to walk but a better area as the afternoon was progressing.
Unfortunately, it began to drizzle when we were about half way there. Stoically continuing on we finally arrived (it was further away than the other store). We purchased chowder, milk for our coffee/tea and breakfast cereal and caught a taxi back to the hotel.
Dinner eaten (while watching Bruce Willis Die Hard), blogs and pictures posted we headed off to bed.
