An early rise this morning to join the throng headed for sunrise at Ankor Wat but well worth the effort. The temple built in the 12th century is truly a mark of amazing ingenuity, architecture, engineering and artistic craftsmanship.
The amazing detail of the wall inscriptions and story scenes have to be seen to be believed along with the incredible precision of its construction that has stood for a 1000 years. At the centre of the temple stands five towers that are atop of the top or third level. We had to sit and wait to gain access to this level but the view from the top was fabulous. By the way, access to this level is only given if you abide by the dress code so thank goodness for our $15 Big W "temple trousers" and "suck eggs" to the English tourists who pushed in but didn't shop right! "Karma" they call it!
After Ankor Wat we then visited Ta Prohm a temple built after Ankor Wat in the late 12th century and incredibly interesting also. It has a massive stone wall perimeter with 4 gates. The fig trees of the jungle gave taken their toll on the structure as has all the other factors such as age, weather, civil war, looters and tourists but it was still incredible none the less. While there we also witnessed some of the restoration taking place funded by India.
The last stop on our temple tour was Bayon at the centre of Ankor Thom. Slightly different in style to Ankor Wat and not as well preserved but still we marveled at the incredible architecture.
The trip into Cambodia has not only been amazing but also educational in many ways and is well worth a visit.
