Wow, talk about Nowheresville! This place has "bogun" (Ozzie slang for redneck) written all over it...
We landed at Alice Springs airport and were transferred to our accommodation in total silence by the driver. The place we stayed at, Alice in the Territory, looked more like a penitentiary than a lodge. We ended up in a dorm room with a crazy woman from Sydney, whom I nicknamed "Sydney Psycho", due to her temperament and general insane behaviour and manner. As soon as I started talking to her, she flipped out and started going off about how things weren't anyone else's business etc. She would also turn the volume on the TV really loud and storm out the room intermittently. She went to sleep with her backpack on her bed as if we'd steal her stuff in the middle of the night!
This is the 4th mature woman in a dorm we have come across who is a little off her rocker! First, we had the 60year old "Jungle Jane" (so called because her first name was Jane and she lived for 12 years in the Borneo jungle) at Phillip Island. Jane decided to prod me in the back at 3AM and wake me up as I was snoring (only lightly!) and then she proceeded to go back to sleep and snore and keep me awake! Then, she flipped out coz my alarm went off at 7am - in a dorm room - said I should have told her the night before! What a Prima Dona!
At Port Douglas, we had the dorm-room neighbour from hell - a 50-something Austrian woman who became more and more drunk as the evening progressed and sat outside on her patio sounding like someone with Tourettes possessed by an exorcist - talking to herself and swearing at the top of her lungs at her daughter, Australia and the world at large. We complained to the management and eventually they had to call the police to take her away. It turns out that she had been evicted from a place she'd been renting in town and the police already knew her!
Our problem in Port Douglas were far from over as we had a new dormmate the next day, also in her 50's, nicknamed "Sidney Snob" because of her annoying habit of looking down on everyone and everything. There didn't seem to be anything that this woman didn't claim to know the answer to or have a sarcastic remark about. Well, when the lights went out, Sydney Snob became Sydney Snorer and continued to annoy us all night long. This woman snored like a steam train and kept everyone in the room awake - I could even hear her through my earplugs!
Anyways, back to the blog about Alice Springs. Hmmm, not that much to say. It's a bit "down and out" and rundown. People don't seem that friendly and there's some odd looking characters walking/driving the streets. We "checked in" at the Rock Tours office and spoke to the manager, Liam, who told us to stock up on snacks in town and chatted to us about his recent trip to New Zealand.
As our hostel was quite a way outta town, we decided to go to the Casino across the road to eat at the restaurant called "Juicy Rump", which Wendy says made her think of me (thanks Wendy!). Also, we were trying to avoid spending too much time back in the dorm room with Sidney Psycho. An early night for us as we had to be ready for our 6am bus pick-up.
