I asked Wendy to drive today so I could relax as I've been driving for most of the trip and need a break. I do love driving, but sometimes it's good to leave the reins to someone else, so to speak. Heard on a local radio station, on our way to Boulder, that 72 people a day are arrested in the state of Colorado for driving drunk (or DUI as it is known in the States). Now, I do realise that Colorado is a huge state, but that seems quite excessively high! If my calculations are correct, that means that over 26000 people, in one state alone, are caught driving drunk! So, that begs the question, how many people are driving drunk but get away with it?
Oh, on the topic of getting caught, we got stopped by a Highway State Trooper today as Wendy didn't move lanes when she passed him on the Highway. Colorado state law requires drivers to move away from stationary emergency or state vehicles. In this case, the state trooper had his lights flashing as he'd pulled someone else over. Once we passed him, he followed us and flashed his lights indicating for us to pull over. Wendy carried on driving as she thought he'd forgotten them on! Anyways, he was real nice and explained the reason why he'd stopped us. It seems, though, that he wanted to chat more than anything else! He was asking us about our trip and about Germany as he was going there in a week's time to visit some relatives.
Stopped in the little town of Nederland en route to Boulder and ate a chicken sandwich at the Savoury Cafe. Felt quite carsick at this stage as the road was windy and up 'n down all the way. Beautiful views, though! As we drove into Boulder, we descended so quickly and dramatically that our ears were popping - 3000 feet in 30minutes!
When we arrived in Boulder, we discovered at the Visitor's Centre that there are no campgrounds or hostels within or close to the city! The closest campsite was in the neighbouring town of Lyons. So, after buying some cheesecake "to go" at the famous Cheesecake Factory, we headed 10miles north to the Lyons Meadows RV Park. The campground is situated right on a gorgeous little stream, opposite a rocky cliff. It's probably one of the most beautiful locations we have camped in so far and, at $15/night, probably the cheapest. If it weren't for the resident bears, we would have felt super comfortable in this idyllic setting!
We were too tired to return to Boulder that evening, so we went to a local restaurant instead. I saw an ad for it in the local area guide - the Fork Lyons has a quirky, colourful exterior and a great patio out back. We both ordered the same dish: pork tenderloin on a bed of corn and bacon risotto with a garnish of broccolini. What a mouthwateringly delicious dish it was - one of the best plates I've had in the States! The pork was soft and juicy, the risotto was soft (and crunchy) - just the right side of salty - and the broccolini was tender and fresh.
