Leaving kuala lumpur today. On first impressions I hated Malaysia, I thought it looked like England but with palm trees. I missed Tuk Tuks, craziness and no speed limits. After spending a couple of days here I have started to see how this modern high rise city still has some cool asian quirks. On the bus journey here I met some great American guys originally from south american now living in Virginia. They have been a lot of fun to travel with, on our first day I took them for the ultimate cultural experience which was nandos! They'd never heard of it before but obviously loved it.
We then headed for the kuala lumpur telecom tower and looked out over the city. We found a malaysian festival afterwards which was basically a lot of freebies! Yay!
We held a snake, tried birds nest drink, almond chocolates, curry and mango shakes. Then we meet a crazy old man that kept a lot of bees he was telling us how he uses bee stings as Botox and if we had any pains it would make us better, so I decided it would be fun to let him sting me with a bee, to be fair it didn't hurt that much but it's been two days now and my elbow has doubled in size and is pretty itchy. (Dont panic nan! I'm sure I'll be fine).
We headed for the twin towers after where I saw the first topshop I've seen in 4 months, needless to say I was excited but the boys yet again had never heard of it. I showed them topman and they just kept asking me whether I was sure all this jewellery and clothes were for men!
I'm pretty sure they think all British men are a bit too in touch with their feminine side now!
We ended our evening in china town at the reggae bar where my 'Vang Vieng detox' went out the window AGAIN as alcohol is still cheaper than soft drinks.
Yesterday we booked ourselves on the 7 wonders of KL tour where we visited temples, little India, the kings palace, the city gallery and the Batu caves where we ate an authentic northern Indian meal before climbing over a thousands steps to the cave... Slightly foolish but was a funny climb as John had his drink stolen by a monkey jumping on him from the trees - he got scared and tried to hand me the drink but I was too busy trying to find my camera!
We also visited a mosque where I had to wear a purple burka. We learnt some interesting facts about the Islamic faith from a Muslim man that only shook the hands of the boys when greeting us and told me that it isn't oppressive to women to dress in a burka as it prevents rape. I considered setting him straight by telling him how rape has nothing to do with how a women dresses but decided there probably wasnt enough hours in the day to try to make him see women as equals. On a lighter note those burkas are hot! God knows how women wear them all day in what must be about 35 degrees heat everyday
Over all it was a great day, learnt a lot about the history of KL and the different cultures. Today we're heading for the Cameron highlands for some jungle trekking, should be fun!
