Today we left Mount Cook and headed down to Dunedin - the town is named after Edinburgh and is apparently very Scottish! The drive was through very pretty landscape - we stopped off a few times along the way (we've brought a big road map book that tells you interesting places to stop so we checked out the ones that sounded the best!) Though we did stopped at what was apparently Maori rock art and couldnt see anything....We had a tastey lunch at a small cafe in the middle of nowhere called The Flying Pig! I no longer think i can call Hereford small, or say i live in the middle of nowhere, as small and middle of nowhere really are tiny and middle of nowhere here!!We stopped at a beach to look at some perfectly rounded rocks (they do have a name but i can not remember them) then we headed into Dunedin. We decided not to stay in the town but instead go out onto the Otago Peninsula where there was a campsite in a little village called Portobello. Our only problem was we started to drive up the windy coastal road when we realised we had very little petrol...none! We debated over whether there would be petrol along the penisular and in the end decided to turn back towards town. It was a bit of a nail biting journey back...but we made it! On the way back along the penisular once we'd filled up we managed to see how lovely it was along the drive - it was a lovely evening, and when we got to the campsite we sat out for a while.
We decided Dunedin looked really nice so we'd spend a whole day here and stay the night again. We had a nice relaxing morning then head off for a tourist day. We'd planned to go visit Larnach castle - but managed to drive past the turning we'd seen the night before, so headed into the town centre first. As we walked into the centre we were greeted by the sound of bangpipes being played by a man dressed in full Scottish attire! He must of been hot (very warm day!) We stopped for lunch - i had the most gorgeous steak sandwich!! Then we had a potter around. We drove back up the penisular and managed to spot the sign to the castle - the road leading to it was very steep and narrow - Twiki (our campervan) only just managed to get up! There were the most beautiful views over the coast line though. The castle was much more of a manor house in my eyes, but the gardens were very pretty. The weather turned chilly so we headed back to the campsite for a lazy late afternoon.
