Arrived in Cairns in just over 2 hours flying time, a shuttle bus picked us up and brought us straight to the Cairns City Motel, a budget hotel but perfect location and has all we need, beds, private bathroom (after being in the camper a private bathroom is luxury) fridge, toaster and kettle. We went straight into town and did some shopping, filled the fridge with salad stuff, cheese and ham and that was dinner for 4 nights! Blew the budget last night and went for a lovely meal, rack of Aussie lamb for me and emu, roo, croc and barramundi for phil.
Best day had to be when we caught the Reef magic boat over to the Great Barrier Reef, 1 and half hours sailing to the pontoon where we moored up for the day. Went on two trips, submarine and the glass bottom boat. Buffet lunch was delish. Then got my life jacket etc on and went in the sea, was awesome and I can't believe I've never snorkelled before but hey what a great first place!
We hired a car for the day and drove south to a few waterfalls then north to Port Douglas where we stopped for lunch then drove on down to Palm Cove which is suppose to be one of the nicest beaches.....obviously they haven't seen beaches in Cornwall! Was hopping for a swim but the beach was closed as there had been a sighting of a salt water crocodile and jelly fish.
In Cairns city they have a huge swimming pool on the shape of Queensland, it's longest stretch must be about 25m and deep in the middle,. It's totally free and has lifeguards. Spent 2 afternoons cooling down at the pool.
Within 7 mins of the apartment there is a huge indoor shopping mall and it was air conditioned so we managed to spend a few hours in there and brought a few bits.
Other times spent in Cairns city is just walking around the shops and seafront.
It's strange it gets dark by 1900!
