Van Trip 2007
Day 61.......31st August 2012
Kilometres Travelled.......356
We left Rockhampton at 9:30am and travelled via Mount Morgan, Biloela, Monto and Eidsvold to Mundubbera,
Stayed at the Three Rivers Tourist Park, site 7 at $29.00 per night. We were very happy with the Park. Coincidentally the owners of the Park came from the Central Coast, they took it over 10 months ago, and their efforts to improve it were evident. Upon the owner's advice we went to the local pub for dinner and enjoyed a very delicious roast.
Mount Morgan is a town situated on the Dee River, 38 kilometres south of Rockhampton , and 680 kilometres north of Brisbane. The Dee River is considered to be the most polluted river in Queensland.
The town was founded as a gold mining town in 1882, and over time the Mount Morgan Mine has produced gold, silver and copper. The Mine finally closed in 1981, having produced vast quantities of gold during its lifetime. During the mining operation, most of the mountain was mined away, and the town now lies adjacent to a 300 metre deep acid-water filled pit.
Biloela is a rural town situated 120 kilometres inland from the port city of Gladstone at the junction of the Burnett and Dawson highways. At the 2006 census, it had a population of 5,371. Biloela is generally believed to be Aboriginal for "black or white cockatoo".
The town has a diverse range of industries, and extensive grazing and cropping concerns are found in the area, including Cotton, Sorghum and Wheat.
The Callide Power Station lies just north of the town. Coal was discovered on Callide Creek in 1891 and is now mined at the nearby Callide and Boundary Hill mines which supply the power station. A large abattoir is also situated in the town.
Biloela’s biggest attraction is The SILO. More than 28 metres high, it is filled, not with grain, but with an array of displays about primary industry.
Mundubbera is located on the Burnett Highway, 405 kilometres North West of Brisbane and 200 kilometres west of Bundaberg. It is built on the banks of the Burnett River. In 2001 the town had a population of 1,053.
Industry in Mundubbera is entirely based around agriculture and forestry. The major agricultural activities are cattle grazing and fruit growing. Fruit grown in the Mundubbera area includes citrus, mangoes, avocados and stone fruit. In addition, Mundubbera is Queensland's largest producer of table grapes. During the fruit picking seasons Mundubbera can double in size as many itinerant workers and backpackers from around the world come to the town looking for work on the orc*************al workers are accommodated in two large caravan parks in town.
